When the Neopets TTRPG Kickstarter launched, everyone in the indie design space who even grazed the age range of a millennial collectively went, “man, they should have let me make that.” Presumably, none of you would have tried to just make D&D 5e again, so you were all correct.

Since we aren’t getting the official Neopets TTRPG we deserve, we may as well make the unofficial ones all of us should have been designing.

The purpose of this jam is to design a tabletop roleplaying game inspired in some part by Neopets—the world, the game, the memories, or just the vibe. Games of any size or completion level are allowed, including hacks, one-pagers, ashcans, WIPs, or sprawling systems. If you want to use this jam as an excuse to pick a WIP back up, be my guest. While I have no intention to be coy, depending on how much you respect copyright and/or fear a DMCA, you can make your game explicitly based upon Neopets, name and all, or otherwise choose to make something only inspired by Neopets.

You may not submit games already completed and published, anything that uses generative AI, real-world bigotry, explicit sexual content, or literally just D&D 5e with the names swapped around. Remember, I am report EVERYBODY, so you best behavior.

Short on ideas? Consider some of these:

  • Make a game based on the experience of playing Neopets as an owner of pets
  • Or set your game within the world of Neopia
  • Look through some of the old plots and set your game within one of them
  • Use NeoQuest as an inspiration, and make a grid-based tactical combat fantasy game that isn’t just 5e
  • Make faeries the player characters of your game
  • Focus on just one of Neopia’s worlds and set your game in there
  • Make a modular game that adapts to any setting within Neopia
  • Pick a flash game you really liked and make a game based on that
  • Use a Neopets game's mechanics as your game's mechanics
  • Write some random tables based on the Something Has Happened! random events, pet colors, or something else
  • Make a collection of Battledome equipment

Please feel free to join the Sunflower Court game jam Discord server and chat about your ideas!
