The Brief: Create an interactive piece of work that explores and combines two or more genres. You will be asked to develop knowledge around two or more ‘genres’ and experimentally combine them together.
"Genre, we might say, is a set of conventional and highly organised constraints on the production and interpretation of meaning" (Frow, 2014).
Reductively, genre defines what ‘kind of thing’ a piece of art or entertainment is. Genre conventions are developed over time, amalgamated from multiple works, and culturally accepted. The genre label describes a work’s similarity to other kinds of works, whether that be technically, or in the emotional response it provokes. We use the genre label to signify, convey meaning, and set up expectations, even though some works are not defined easily by a single genre, or any genre at all. Genres and conventions shift over time, with technology and society. Genres also carry different meanings and formal elements depending on the medium - literature, film, video games, music, etc.
