GAME-A-WEEK is a 9-week programme organised & run by Firepit. → Join the Ziscord

“An unexamined life would be kind of lame imo”
- Anonymous, pretentious ancient greek.
For our final week, you’ll each be revisiting your own catalogue of games and creating a “sequel” to one of the seven previous games made in this program.
Not literally, of course - when I say “sequel”, I really mean that you should use this as an opportunity to iterate on one of your games (although if you want to make an actual sequel to one of your games, go ahead). What I mean by iterate is to stick with an idea, revisit it, find what’s wrong with it and make it better. Take an unresolved or imperfect prototype, break it down and rebuild it.
Everyone has been able to explore a really wide range of ideas and it’s awesome to see everyone work so quickly, but one thing that gets lost in programs like this is the chance to stick with an idea and really work on it. There’s no chance to act on feedback, since you’ll already be moving onto the next game!
So: take a prototype you made in the last seven weeks and figure out a way to take it further - rethink its core mechanic, or its aesthetic, or its whole concept. Rather than create something from scratch, this is an opportunity to use a previous project as a foundation to build upon, which should hopefully allow you to make something more complex or resolved than you’ve been able to so far.
Note: this doesn’t mean you should take a resolved prototype and polish it further - the design idea behind it needs to change in a meaningful way. Having said that, if you feel like there’s a game you made that that didn’t really reach its full potential (i.e. didn’t function well enough to prove whether the idea behind it was any good) you can take this opportunity to properly resolve it - you should be holding this kind of approach to a higher standard, though!
Check out this Google Sheet for more information/resources.
There are none this week! Since this is a very personal theme, self reflection and iteration are at it's core. How you go about this process though, is up to you!
