Brushing Teeth Gif

The real world can feel pretty exhausting sometimes, so why not try to make it a little more fun?

Everyday Life Jam Banner

The Everyday Life Jam invites devs, regardless of their experience level, to turn "just getting through" a standard daily routine into playing a standard daily routine. This can mean anything from brushing your teeth in the morning to working an eight-hour retail shift. If it's something you (or any other average Joe) would do on any given weekday, it's a great subject for this jam.

This jam starts on March 31st at 5:00 PM EST. You (or a small team) then have two weeks to make a game that fits the jam. This time allows you to work through two weekends, and is designed so you don't have feel pressured to work the full two weeks! There's even an optional field when submitting to tell everyone how long you spent on your project.

This jam isn't competitive, but you do get brownie points if your entry goes above slapping a "normal" coat of paint on a well-established genre, and instead actually "game-ifies" something from everyday life. A standard bullet hell where you dodge credit card offers instead of laser shots, for example, would hypothetically rank lower than an inventive game where the whole goal is bagging groceries correctly. This line can be hard to define, though, and it definitely isn't an absolute guideline! Honestly, feel free to ignore me completely and just make whatever you want.

Rules

  • No hateful content. If your daily routine includes committing hate crimes on the dot at 10 PM, it doesn't need to be represented here.
  • No NSFW content. We know sex is a part of daily life for a lot of people, but this isn't that kind of jam. We want it to be open to everyone, regardless of age. Absolutely nothing even vaguely pornographic.
  • Entries must be made within the designated period. If you have basic, preexisting code for something simple like movement or drawing things to the screen, it's fine to use that. Just don't import an entirely finished game and spend the jam time to polish it up. If you're unsure, feel free to ask. (Using royalty-free assets is also fine! Just include the proper attribution).
  • Add content warnings if necessary. This can be standard warnings for any content that might be generally upsetting, but it is an absolute necessity that you provide ample warning for things that can physically harm someone (flashing lights, rapid motion, etc.).
  • Don't test the waters. If you're unsure about anything, just ask. Don't try to push the limits of what we're willing to put up with. We reserve the right to get rid of any entries that intentionally break these rules.
