Entropy Game Jam

The Entropy Jam is a 21-day game jam where teams create games by embracing chaos first, then wrangling it into harmony.

The Jam's objectives and measures are two fold:   1- Variety.   2- Cohesion.

Mix wildly different styles across art, music, writing, UI, and more—but also make it all feel intentional by the end!

This jam is primarily about exploration, expression & experimentation, and secondarily about direction, composition and cohesion.

It is about mixing things up, getting out of your comfort zone, embracing creative chaos, and at the end, assembling it as best as you can.

You can make any type of game!

Recommended Project Timeline

Phase 1: Recruitment

Recruit participants for a variety of roles, and even wider variety of styles.

You can approach this by for example recruiting a single artist to do a high quantity of styles, or many artists to do a style each. Both approaches are completely valid.

We recommend the recruitment of creative directors, or those who would be great at planning, composition, and assembly of the assets.

Phase 2: Preparing

In this phase, talk to one another! Who's going to do what?!

Work out your story outline and the game structure.

Make concepts and write down ideas!

Figure out how you want to make what you want to make!

Think about what styles you'd like to try out!

Phase 3: Chaos (Jam Start)

Start writing, drawing, composing, and designing in many styles.

Do what you were too afraid to do before.

Be free and try the styles you've wanted to explore.

Create many a asset!

Phase 4: Order

Assemble what you've created into a comprehensive experience.

Configure and order everything made up until now as best as you can.

Recap

  1. The submitted works must include chaos! A variety of styles, all mashed together well.
  2. Your work should be free at least for a month after the jam ends so everyone who took part can play it. You're however free to make it paid later on.
  3. You can only start working on the game once the jam starts. You're not allowed to finish up old projects. (However, you can use pre-made asset packs found on itch.io)
  4. Demos and fanworks are allowed, but incomplete experiences should be penalized when rating.
  5. Games cannot be oriented around nsfw; while seinen & 18+ content is allowed, they must still be story-first.
  6. Projects made using AI are completely disallowed (even text) and will be removed from the jam.
  7. Any project reported to be using stolen assets, or any asset without appropriate licensing/permission will be removed from the jam.

Rating Standards

Did you find a lot of variety in styles and assets? Was there enough chaos?

Do you think the chaos was tamed and directed into a comprehensive experience?

Did you enjoy the game?

Is the game presented well?

Would you play a more polished version of the game later?

Recap

This jam is about exploring what you're unfamiliar with and expressing yourself.

During the jam period, the teams must create a narrative focused experience, featuring as many styles as they're able to muster (everything! including art, music, writing, UI, and more!).

But the team should also pay some attention to cohesion and composition of everything.  While, chaos has more weight than order in scoring, neither should be neglected.

No AI, No porn, No stolen assets, No priced submissions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can a single participant create assets of various styles?

Yes! In fact, participants are encouraged to discover and experiment with new styles.

Can a single participant create assets of a single style?

While you CAN stick to what you've been doing best, remember that the objective of the submissions is variety, exploration and expression! It's completely alright for individuals to only provide what they're accustomed to, but submitted works must be made out of various styles nevertheless. So, you can have a higher quantity of participants involved in a project, each providing a lesser quantity of creations.
