Minecraft modding is a great way to get a better grasp of how programming works. For folks just starting to learn how to make mods, open-source mods are one of the best tools to learn. By having some solid examples they can mess around with, new learners can figure out what specific parts of the Minecraft and Forge codebase do. This is an event to promote FOSS mods and give new creators a kick to start their own mod development!

The jam will have three themes chosen randomly from the Minecraft Gamepedia. They're more to kickstart some inspiration than actual requirements, but it is recommended you go along with one or multiple of the themes.

The themes are:

1. Nether Brick (item)

2. Iron Golem

3. Wither Skeleton

You can ask for help and join in the fun either in the jam's forums or in #fossjam on EsperNet. The jam goes from midnight on 2/22 to 11:59 PM on 3/8. Enjoy!

RULES:

  • Mods must be free and open-source, i.e. licensed under an OSI-approved license. We recommend the MIT and LGPLv3.
  • Mods must be for Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge 14.23.2.2611 or later.
  • Mods must NOT have dependencies on closed-source mods. Dependencies on source-visible mods are acceptable, ex. an open-source addon for Thermal Expansion.
  • No submitting projects started before the jam began.
  • Please don't steal any resources for your mod. There are plenty of people in the IRC and forum who would be happy to help make art for you!
  • It's recommended you base your mod idea on one of the three themes (announced the day before the jam), but it isn't required.
  • Have fun and don't take it too seriously!
