Well, so did we. So we decided to do something. But that something needed collective action across a range of people and areas for it to have any impact. During a meeting with a local community client, the concept of misinformation and media, especially social media being used to manipulate people towards extreme viewpoints became a clear clarion call to action. This website and the social communication associated with it are our collective reaction to the growing concern around manipulation of our frameworks of communication, be it media, social media or even political discourse, by a network of influences that are both invisible to scrutiny and empowered by new technologies. Our intention is to identify and discuss this issue across a range of viewpoints. Bringing people together to take collective action, but also to empower others to realize they are being manipulated, knowing how and why it might be happening.
We call on all students, academics, community groups and politicians to address this concern with actions in whatever manner they see fit. We encourage playfulness and thoughtful engagements in whatever form moves you. We simply ask that you share with us and the wider community the results of your actions.
