A whole year of DTJ36!>> The first ever DTJ36 Jam was held on Saturday, April 27th 2024. Since then, there has been a monthly DTJ36 jam on the last weekend of every month, and we are still going strong!

ORIGIN: Devs That Jam originated from a Global Game Jam site in 2023, and a community of game developers slowly built up via Discord. After the GGJ 2023 was over, I (Eggybreadd - DTJ Lead) reached out to the devs in the server asking if we wanted to keep the server running as a virtual game jam hub. It is a space for jammers to share their submissions, experiences, and challenges and suggest which jams to participate in. Then, in April 2024, we trialled the first DTJ36 Jam, which turned out very successfully! Regular feedback was taken from jammers and moulded into the jam that you know and love today.

WHY 36 HOURS?: I came up with the 36-hour format after participating in a few 48-hour weekend game jams. When I was in university, I always wanted to participate in a game jam, but they regularly started on a Friday afternoon, which would clash with university social events. Then, fast-forward 3 years, as a full-time game developer, I found it difficult to finish work on a Friday evening and then jump straight into a 48-hour jam. So I was always keen to participate in a jam, but burnout always crept in due to the lack of rest after the work week. Therefore, I came up with the 36-hour format. A jam that would not cut into your Friday night, and wouldn't bleed into the work week! DTJ36 Jams always start at 11 am on a Saturday (UK) ~ giving you a nice lie in, and finish at 11 pm on the Sunday (UK), not meddling with your sleep schedule (If you're UK-based, that is).

Judges>> Three amazingly talented DTJ36 Winners have come forward to volunteer as judges for the upcoming DTJ36 Jam! There will be a special prize given to the winner of the Judge's Choice Award - an exclusive award for the DTJ36 Anniversary Jam!

Gameandcode>>> Winner of DTJ36#3

YoghurtDrop, aka gameandcode, is a solo game developer from Germany. He creates short but powerful game experiences together with his cat. He currently develops Office After Hours, which is inspired by anomaly style games, workplace anxiety, and the pressures of modern productivity.

Fiberbundles>>> Winner of DTJ36#7

Howdy! I'm a musician and sound engineer from Oklahoma. I've been making music for over 10 years now, and composing for games is one of my favourite things to do! I love creating SFX too, it's like making mini-songs!

CherryMakesGames>>> Winner of DTJ36#11

Hey! I’m Cherry, a student who somehow thought making games in my free time was a relaxing hobby (it’s not, but I love it anyway). I’ve got a small YouTube channel where I ramble about whatever I’m working on - usually my indie game On The Wind’s Breath, which has consumed my soul in the best possible way. It’s a passion project, emphasis on passion, mild panic, and a lot of coffee.

FAQ:

Can I submit a game I made previously?

No. You can only submit a game created within the jam's timeframe.

Can I make changes to my submission during the voting period?

No. Submissions are locked during the voting period but are unlocked afterwards. If you need to update your game after submission, please reach out to a moderator via the DTJ Discord. Amended games will not be eligible for prizes.

Do I have to follow the theme?

No. Your game will still be rated, will not be eligible for prizes.

Can I use code and assets from my other jam submissions?

Yes, as long as you have the rights to use it. The DTJ 36-hour Jam isn't strict on the "build it from scratch" rule.

Do I have to upload my submission in a particular format?

We recommend you upload your game so it is playable in the itch.io web browser. However, a downloadable file also is fine, but your ratings may be lower. Some submissions may be bigger than itch.io's 1GB download limit - we recommend linking to a public Google Drive folder to work around this.

Do I retain the rights to my submission?

By submitting a project to this jam you are agreeing to have your game rated and commented on, and for your submission to be displayed on the DevsThatJam website and socials if you/your team are chosen as this month's winner(s)! The rights to the project remain your own. Submissions unlock after the rating period.

I couldn't submit on time, what do I do?

There will be an announcement on the DTJ discord server about how to submit late if you missed the deadline, so please make sure to join!
