SPOOKY SEASON IS UPON US

In the Northern hemisphere, Autumn is soon to be upon us, and with it brings thoughts of life, death, and the harvest. This holiday season holds special meanings to each of us in its own ways, but today we are here for one thing: making DOOM 3 maps!

THE RULES

The parameters for this map jam are simple:

- entries will only have 1024 unit³ of volume to work within, STAY WITHIN THE BOUNDARIES!
- entries must be created underneath their own unique mod folder for sanity and ease of distribution (yourname_spooky22 works fine). Use '+set fs_game modfolder' on a start-up shortcut to keep your game engine in the right folder!
- entries may use custom sounds/textures/models
- entries must not have any obscene/offensive content (no adult material, hate speech, etc.)
- entries may be created using any idTech4-capable editor (DarkRadiant, NetRadiant Custom, TrenchBroom, DoomEdit)
- entries must be spooky or otherwise seasonally-themed. You don't have to make a jumpscare-laden monster closet party on Mars if you don't want to!

GETTING STARTED WITH D3 MAPPING

If you're totally new to this mapping stuff, or if you do have mapping experience, just in another engine, have no fear! There's plenty of guides and tutorials to help educate you!

Vanilla D3 vs. BFG Edition

Before we get too far, however, you have a decision to make: will you be using TrenchBroom or not?

- If you choose to use TrenchBroom, you must use the RBDOOM-3-BFG source port, and your map will NOT BE BACKWARDS-COMPATIBLE WITH VANILLA D3
- If you choose to use a *Radiant-style editor, your maps WILL  be compatible with the original DOOM 3 as well as the RBDOOM-3-BFG port.
- The BFG Edition has mods disabled by default. Playing any custom content with the BFG Edition requires RBDOOM-3-BFG.

There's no right or wrong answer here. You'll be able to submit your map either way, just let us know if your entry is a BFG-only map.

Using TrenchBroom

Robert Beckbans, the lead programmer of the RBDOOM-3-BFG source port, has put together a great crash course tutorial video on how to get started with DOOM 3: BFG Edition mapping using TrenchBroom. NOTE THAT THIS IS A CUSTOM FORK OF TRENCHBROOM HE'S CREATED. MAINLINE TRENCHBROOM DOES NOT SUPPORT DOOM 3 (YET)

Using *Radiant-style Editors

This is the start of a wonderful playlist going through multiple aspects of mapping and modding DOOM 3. Even if you're using TrenchBroom, it's still highly recommended to give these videos a watch to get a better understanding of DOOM 3 modding as a whole.

Additional idTech4 Modding Info

If you're more into reading things, there is an idTech4 ModWiki and idDevNet mirror that goes over some more advanced stuff. There is also an idTech4 Discord server where you can ask questions, keep up-to-date on the progress of source ports, or share your own map progress under the #mapping-jam channel!

That's it!

Entries can be turned in starting September 22nd, but feel free to start whenever! Deadline is on November 1st, so good luck, and have fun!
