Welcome to the Domino Game Jam! Over 2 months, create a game and submit it here, then play other submissions and tell the game creators how it went. :)

The theme is: Escape!

Rules

  • Only members of the team can contribute to the project, with the exception of play testing.
  • Teams can only use free assets or assets that they have made themselves. Please list all asset packs used (if any) in your game’s submission page. This includes music and text.
  • The game should be safe for work! Low poly gore and video game violence is fine, but if the topics covered would make a reasonable person uncomfortable, don’t include it. For example, Moonlighter, Doom or Stardew Valley are acceptable, but Binding of Isaac is not accepted.
  • Roughly track the time you spend on the game and show the number of team hours spent. This can be on your game's title screen or on it's submission page.

FAQ

What is a game jam?

“"Jam" is a reference to musicial jam sessions. Similarly, the goal with a "game jam" is to come together and make a videogame, or a non-digital (analog) game like a board game or card game. Participants rapidly prototype game designs and inject new ideas to help inspire and grow the global game industry. We share a common theme and constraints. We ask participants to create a game from beginning to end in a prescribed time.”

Why does the Game Jam have a theme?

Having a theme is a staple when running game jams. It gives each jam it’s own flavour (pun intended), gives people a constraint to work with and also reduces the chance of people submitting a game they have already made.

I don’t like the theme! Can we ignore it?

You can’t ignore the theme, although your game does only loosely have to relate to it. There’s lots of scope to work around - for example if the theme was ‘farming’, you don’t have to make a farming simulator game - as long as you can relate it back in some way then that’s fine. So for farming, you could instead make a crafting game which happens to have farm elements (wheat cultivation, animal management) as just one part of the game.

Do I need to use a specific game engine or style?

Nope! As long as people can play your game, it can be anything.

Can I make my game in work time since it’s a ‘Domino’ game jam?

The short answer is no. You can use innovation time to work on your game, but you can’t work on your game instead of working towards your sprint.  Perhaps if we run the event again, we can do a shorter event which would take place in work time, but that hasn’t been explored yet.

Does Domino own my game? Can I publish it?

If you didn’t make use of innovation time to make your game, then it’s 100% yours! But please check your contract for further clarification around reasonable and fair work restrictions.

I don’t know how to or don’t want to code, can I take part?

Yes! There’s more to games than just the code. You can contribute towards a team’s story, art direction, music, or even just the general organisation and running of the team. Post in the Teams “Find a Team” section/the community tab here, with the skills you’d like to use.

I wasn’t in the original email invite / I’m in another team within Domino, can I take part?

Yes, you can join the Teams channel and submit your team - we only initially included Software since this is the core group. Anyone within Domino (including DLG and other non-Bar Hill offices) is welcome!
