Welcome to the DevSoc Campus Quest Game Jam!

Theme: Minute To Win It

Create a game that revolves around speedrunning (aka completing the game as fast as possible). Your game should feature a timer, and allow players to view their current times for a completion as well as their best. It doesn't matter what the players should be speedrunning; that part of the game is completely up to you, so be creative. Good luck!

What exactly is a game jam?

A game jam is a competition where developers (either solo or in teams) compete to make a finished game in a short period of time, usually surrounding a theme. But game jams are less about competing and more about having fun. So even if you've never made a game before, a game jam is the perfect chance to give something new a try!

How long is this game jam?

This game jam is going to take place over a weekend starting the 10th of April at 00:00:00AM, and ending the 13th of April, 23:59:59PM.

Who is this game jam for?

This game jam is meant for members of the developers society in South Africa across the different universities. If you are not part of any developers society you can enter, but your entry will be ignored :P

What is the theme?

The theme will be announced as soon as the game jam starts.  The theme will dictate what your game should be about. The theme however won't be very strict and isn't meant to restrict you, but more to jump start creativity, and promote innovation!

Can I participate in a team?

Yes! It is encouraged that you enter the game jam as a team, but you are also completely welcome to enter alone. The maximum team size is 4.  If you do enter as a team, only one person has to submit an entry, and then the other team members' student numbers must just be included in the description of the submission.

How is rating of the submissions going to work?

After the weekend of the game jam, there will be a week where people who made a submission to the game jam can play and rate other submissions.  (If you made a team submission you can add your team mates as contributors to the submission so that they can also play and rate other people's games). There are 4 criteria which games are rated by: Theme, Innovation, Art, Enjoyment (See rules for a description of each criterion). After that week,  the Stellenbosch E-Sports society will play and rate the top five entries and decide their final rankings.

What is the prize for the winners?

Bragging rights.

Rules (boring but we have to list them):

  1. The game has to be made in the game jam time. You are allowed to use assets you've made prior to the game jam sparingly, but the majority of the game has to be made prior to the game jam.
  2. You are allowed to enter in a team with up to 4 people. Only one submission however should be made, but ALL team members should be listed in the description of your submission. Any team with more than 4 members will be disqualified, as well as any submission which hasn't credited all of its team members properly.
  3.  No NSFW content is allowed in any submission, with zero tolerance. Keep it PG people.
  4. All content in your submission has to have been made by you or one of your team members, or you should have the appropriate permissions to use the assets in your game. If you use any assets not made by your team, please list them all in the description, with links to the original creators. If you are found to be using outsider assets without proper credit, you will be disqualified.
  5. The judges and executive committee members of the developers society are allowed to disqualify any entry that they deem inappropriate or misrepresentative  of the developers society's values. They hold the authority to disqualify any game entry which they deem to have broken the rules of the game jam.
  6. Every submission has to support at least one of the following platforms (it's even better if you support every platform listed): Windows, Linux, Web
  7. All submissions should be rated by the following 4 criteria: Theme (How well the submission fits the given theme for the game jam), Art (How well the art compliments the game and gameplay, as well as the quality of the art), Enjoyment (How fun the game is to play), Innovation (How unique and creative the game is)
  8. The most important rule... have fun!
