Welcome to this very impromptu demoscene jam! make a demo!! AMIGAAAA

What are demos?

Demos are a computer art form. Wikipedia says it better than I could:

The demoscene is an international computer art subculture focused on producing demos: self-contained, sometimes extremely small, computer programs that produce audio-visual presentations. The purpose of a demo is to show off programming, visual art, and musical skills.

Demos are non-interactive, which means the designers of a demo can focus on making the presentation as cinematic as possible. Think of it like an executable that generates a video with code.

Here are some examples of demos:

The history of the demoscene goes back to the 190s and beyond, and there are lots of resources and thousands of amazing demos out there. The scene is still growing by the year, and I thought I'd do my small part by hosting a jam for folks to try their hand at making demos.

What's this jam all about, then?

For this jam, your task is to make a demo! In one week, make a program that, without any user input, generates cool artsy moving graphics with neat music.

Here are some tips:

  • This is not a compo - there's no judging and no winner. This is supposed to be an intro to the demoscene and to making demos. Have fun with it!
  • No platform restrictions! PC, DOS, C64, Amiga, SNES, PICO-8, whatever you want to make it for.
    • Browser-based and downloadable demos are both fine.
    • It's courteous to make a video recording of your demo, for folks who don't have the target platform or can't run it.
  • No size restrictions either! Make something tiny or something big.
  • Generally, demos can operate without any user input, except maybe to close the program. See how much you can do without any interactivity at all!
  • Making a program that just plays a video file of cool graphics is generally considered bad form.
  • Music and other sound are optional, but recommended.
  • Collaboration is encouraged! Most demos are team efforts. Feel free to enlist a coder or a musician to help you out.
    • It's good manners for a demo to list the names of everybody who worked on it.
