CUDO Plays is an annual board game design competition that has been running since 2013. Because of COVID, we went digital in 2020, so this will be our second tabletop game jam run through itch.io! Participants will have one month to create new tabletop game designs.  Although CUDO Plays is based in Central Illinois, everyone is encouraged to join the jam whether you've been to a CUDO Plays event in the past or not. Entries will not be judged, however participants will be entered for a chance to win a big pile of board games.

Designers: you're more than welcome to playtest your design at home using physical components, however we will be running weekly virtual playtesting events during the course of the jam using Tabletop Simulator, Tabletopia, Roll20, or whatever other digital prototyping platform you use. If you've never used Tabletop Simulator before, we'll be running a short workshop on prototyping in the platform in the first week of the Jam. For more details on all these events, join the CUDO Plays Facebook page and Discord.

Whether you'd a veteran tabletop game designer or a total beginner, we hope you'll be part of CUDO Plays Game Jam Volume 2!

The only constraint for this game jam is right in the title: IT'S ABOUT TIME! All game submissions are required to have a play length of 15 minutes or less! We hope this constraint will provide a unique design challenge while also spawning games that can be playtested and iterated on very quickly.

Answers to some questions that will surely come up about the 15 min limit:

  • No, you don't have to count time spent explaining the rules as part of the 15 minute limit. That said, we hope these short games don't have a rules explanation too much longer than the game itself!
  • You do not have to incorporate an actual timer into the rules of the game, but we do encourage doing that if you want to. It's definitely in the spirit of the jam!

All games will be submitted here on itch.io before 11:59pm Central Time on March 14th, 2021.

To submit, all you need to do is upload a digital copy of the written rules for your game to itch.io. If you created your game in Tabletop Simulator, Tabletopia, or some other virtual platform, we hope you'll share the digital components in your submission as well so that other players can more easily try and rate your game.

Games will not be judged - however, there will be a four-day rating period where other game jam participants and players will be able to rate your game in three different criteria:

  • Creates interesting decisions for the players
  • Unique use of the design constraint (to be revealed when the jam begins!)
  • The game is enjoyable and makes you want to play it again

These ratings are not tied to any prizes, but we hope they foster helpful feedback and discussion among designers.

All teams that submit a game are entered into a raffle to win this awesome collection of tabletop games! If the raffle winner will need these games shipped to their home from Champaign, Illinois, the winner will have to pay for shipping.
