Steps for Participating
- Acquire a copy of RPGMaker 2003! You can purchase it for $20 on Steam or on RPGMaker's official website.
- Download the project template! There's a town, a forest, a world map, and a couple of dungeons. Everything you need to make an RPG!
- Put the template in your RPGMaker 2003 project folder.
- Make a game!
- Upload it to itch.io and submit it to this jam! You can use EasyRPG if you want, or stick with the default Windows-only EXE.
The template project contains ONLY maps. The database is unchanged. Teleport and door events are included for convenience.
The Rules
- Don't change the map tiles. You CAN add events, change the existing teleport events, and make changes to the database and map settings.
- Don't make new maps. Didn't you hear me when I said there's a forest and a town and MULTIPLE dungeons? That's already plenty of maps. More would be bourgeois excess.
- Copying maps for cutscenes or tech trickery is allowed. Adding blank maps is allowed.
- You do not have to use every map. If you just want to make a little game in a town, that's fine. If you just want to climb the tower and nothing else, that's fine.
Everything else is up to you. Do whatever you want with the events and the database. Combat is optional. You can add new assets if you want, just don't change the map tile graphics. And if you feel the need to fudge any of the rules to make your game sing the way you want it to, go ahead, I'm not your dad.
The jam starts right now and lasts until the end of February. That's three weeks, plenty of time to carve out a couple of days or hours to make a little game. And if you have any technical questions about RPGMaker/EasyRPG, or if you just need some encouragement, the #gamedev channel on the SMPS Discord has plenty of knowledgeable folks that are happy to help.
