Computing & Technology Society Spring Hackathon

Overview

Greetings! This is the itch.io page for Fairmont State University's Computing & Technology Society's second hackathon! We're excited to celebrate the spring break with a fun, cooperative event which will hopefully challenge us and teach us a little about our areas of choice. This is a beginner-friendly cooperative hackathon that will be running from the beginning of spring break until the end of spring break. Afterwards, we will show off what we have created during our first C&TS meeting after the break. Good luck, and have fun!

What is this event?

This is a hackathon where the goal is to create a piece of software in a limited amount of time that will be showcased afterwards for others to enjoy. This software can come in the form of a video game, an application, or any other type of software. There are themes that add extra challenge to whatever software is created. The hackathon will start at midnight on March 15th, 2025, and run until March 24th, 2025. There will also be channels in the C&TS Discord server that will provide areas that participants may showcase what they're working on, ask for help, team up, and more.

Themes

Rebirth

Your software should implement some form of self-replication.

Rules

  • Any programming language/game engine can be used to create the software as long as the final product can run on a Windows device.
  • If assets created by other people are used, make sure you have received their permission to use the assets and credit the creators in your submission and your software.
  • Submissions should ideally implement the theme(s) in some aspect.
  • Final products must be SFW/showable in a college club environment. If you have any questions if something is appropriate or not, please ask any of the club officers or Professor Saas.
  • Teams are allowed and encouraged! There is no max size for teammate limit.
  • Late submissions are allowed, but may not be showcased during our first meeting if it's submitted too late.
  • Projects may be started before the start date if you want a head start. However, you will not be able to submit anything before the start date.
  • If there are any special instructions for running the software (installing, configuring, etc.) other than running an executable, please include them with your submission.
  • Don't be toxic towards others! We're all learning together, and this is a fun event to learn a little more about coding and software development!

Q&A

Why does the final product have to run in Windows?

This is so we can showcase the project on one of the computers on campus if needed. These computers run Windows 11, and it makes it more convenient to not have to switch devices/OSes whenever switching projects.

What does the theme mean? Does it mean [Blank] or [Blank]?

The themes are intentionally vague/broad in order to encourage creativity/different interpretations of the themes.

I'm stuck on a certain part of my project, or I need help with something!

There is a channel in the Computing & Technology Society's Discord server to ask for help. This is a collaborative hackathon, so asking for and answering questions is highly encouraged!

Who call can join?

Members of Computing & Technology Society and any Fairmont State University students may participate in the hackathon.

I'm not a member of C&TS. Can I participate?

Certainly! If you are a current or former student of Fairmont State University, you can join the hackathon! If you are interested, please join the C&TS Discord server so that you can keep updated on the hackathon.
