Christmas Game Bakery

This is a beginner-friendly game jam for people that have never made (or finished) a game before.

The idea is to all come together and help each other create small games that are finished before Christmas Eve.

Theme

The themes have been suggested by the participates and randomly assigned.

Join the jam

To participate, you have to join our discord and suggest a theme in our game-jam channel.

If you can't think of any theme, you can always pick a random one.

How it works

At the start of the jam, I will shuffle all themes and assign them to random participants (I will post the final list in the game-jam channel). Think Secret Santa, just with themes.

You will have 3 weeks time to work on your game. Feel free to ask for help and feedback during that time.

Pro Tip: You can actually upload your game early and then continue working on it. This way you will get early feedback and won't be stressed on the last day.

Rules

  • Your game should fit the given theme
  • You may use any existing code or assets (like Kenny's Assets) but don't reuse an existing game.

Tips & Tricks

Here are some tricks that I will be using for creating my game

  • Personally, I will spend 4-8h/week on the jam. This way it won't be in the way of friends and family.
  • I will focus the first week on game play, the second on art and level design, and the third on play testing.
  • I will be exporting the game to HTML to make it easier for play testers to give feedback.

You can use any game engine that you like (or even no engine if that's more your cup of tee).

Personally. I will be using microStudio. I've never tried it, but a game jam is the perfect place to try out something new.

Q & A

Q: Can we join as a group?
A: Yes, of course. However, the person who will upload the game on itch should also be the one suggesting the theme in the discord channel — or else I might get confused.

Q: Can I join multiple groups?
A: Yes, of course. Any help is appreciated.

Q: I can't program. Can I still participate?
A: Yes, of course. There are plenty of no-code game engines, for example Flowlab or Twinery. But you can also make a physical game and upload a PDF with the instructions on how to print and play it.

Q: I have already finished some games. May I still join?
A: Yes, of course. The more, the merrier. However, just keep in mind that this game jam is not a competition.

Q: I missed the deadline, can I still submit my game?
A: Yes, please. We'd love to see what you've created. Sadly, it will not be possible to submit it on itch after the deadline. So please just share it in the discord channel.
