Welcome to The Creative Constraints Narrative Game Jam

About

The purpose of this jam is to encourage creativity. When access increases in any industry, quality usually decreases, resulting in the industry/space becoming saturated with knock offs and copycats. Therefore this jam is an attempt to fight back against the idea that "Good artists copy, great artists steal" by Pablo Picasso. There is more Access to creative tools now more than ever, so this is your opportunity to try something unique and experimental. Everything will be judged on a scale of creativity.

Who is this game jam for?

Narrative Designers/Writers or anyone interested in writing a story.

What is a narrative or a story?

Common Story Structure

Most stories follow a structure that includes:

  1. Exposition – Introduces characters, setting, and background.
  2. Rising Action – Builds tension as the main conflict develops.
  3. Climax – The turning point or most intense moment of the story.
  4. Falling Action – Events that follow the climax and lead toward the end.
  5. Resolution – The conclusion where the conflict is resolved12.

These parts and elements ensure that a story is engaging, coherent, and memorable.

Key Elements of a Story

  • Plot The sequence of events that make up the story, including exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. The plot answers the question: “What happens?”
  • Characters The people, animals, or entities involved in the story. Characters drive the action and give the audience someone to care about. Main types include the protagonist (main character), antagonist (opposing force), and supporting characters.
  • Setting The time and place where the story occurs. The setting provides context and atmosphere for the story.
  • Conflict The central struggle or problem that the characters face. Conflict is essential for creating tension and interest.
  • Theme The underlying message or main idea of the story. The theme gives the story meaning beyond just the events and characters.
  • Point of View The perspective from which the story is told (e.g., first person, third person).
  • Resolution How the conflict is resolved and the story concludes. The resolution shows the outcome and how characters have changed
