Join the Business Card Quest for 2023!

Business Card Quest is a tabletop RPG adventure that is made up from prompts and map pieces found on the back of your business cards!  Think of it like a collective random encounter table but all in a deck made up of the backs of our business cards!

Become a Quest Giver by making your business card part of the adventure so TTRPG seekers and/or convention goers (Questers) are seeking your cards out to add to their deck!

It only takes ~5 minutes to make a simple card back quest element (map, NPC, item, etc) and I have templates and tips below to help!

Questers seek out and remember your cards

Questers, who might not normally pay too much attention to business cards now have extra incentive to seek them out, get curious about your game style, and keep track of your card to play Business Card Quest.  Every time they play, they see your card and logo and get to experience your style.

Highlight your vibe and engage

Having a single map piece and prompt on the back of your card uses normally blank space to showcase to Questers what your art and adventure vibe is in one quick view.  They can experience a little sample of your work instead of having to look up more information or be told about it.

This all means that you get an extra opportunity to display your work and show how awesome it is!

Join a digital business card database for the TTRPG community

By joining the jam, your business card will be part of a Business Card Quest 2023 Jam submissions list that is full of business cards from across the TTRPG community.

If you can’t physically make it to conventions, this is a great way to still get your name and business card out there and Questers can still look you up virutally.

Additionally, for TTRPGkids, I am seeking out digital kid-friendly business cards that promote kid-friendly games so I can compile into a little mini deck to take with me to any conventions that I go to.  I want to help get physical representation of these awesome games out there for creators who can’t go in person, and this is a great way to facilitate that even if you currently only have a digital presence.

It’s easy to join in!

Like I said before, it should only take ~5 minutes to make a simple card back.

To participate, you just need to fill in a business card template to make a front and then create a quest element and short prompt to go with it!

1. Front: make a standard 3.5” x 2” business card for your TTRPG related game, art, blog, etc. (Canva has a ton of templates here - pick one and add your info)

2. Back: make a 3.5” x 2” quest element following the specs here

For maps:

It is easiest to use the BCQ itchio page or Canva templates, but if you want to make your own, just follow these rules:

  • The map path must be 0.5” wide to connect with others
  • At least two paths must connect to the edges for an entry/exit
  • Paths must be centered along the edge
  • Add an adventure prompt
  • Prompts should be short so they can be read easily
  • Include your logo and the QR code for people to find the game rules

For items, creatures, NPCs, and more:

  • Make sure your material is easily readable
  • Include your logo and the QR code for people to find the game rules
  • I have examples here of an item, NPC, and character card
  • The Canva templates also have a simple non-map layout

3. Use whatever illustration program you want (Canva, photoshop, or even paint works)

4. Upload both the front and back of your card as either PNG or JPEG files to an itchio project and submit them to Business Card Quest 2023 Jam

4. Spread the word!  More Quest Givers = more Questers seeking your card!

To help with ideas, here is my submission, which includes a map, character card, item, and NPC to give examples of different types of adventure pieces you can make.  You can use the templates linked above or make your own back style to highlight your flair and art!  For artists who want to help, posting additional map templates for other creators would be a huge boost and much appreciated too!

*please note that if you will be making physical prints of your cards, check your particular printer's print area or proof overlay to make sure your cards come out the way you want*

Pricing etiquette for this quest

Since this is acting as a business card, you want to get word out to as many people as possible, and this is a form of advertising for your other games, I recommend setting your Business Card Quest submission to free/PWYW.   The idea is that Questers should be able to freely search for cards they want or to collect cards from creators they already like to try out your game style.

Happy questing!

Thank you for checking out the Business Card Quest 2023 Jam and I can’t wait to see what quests you come up with and how they’re used by Questers!  If you post pictures of your cards on social media, use #BusinessCardQuest2023 and please help spread the word so we can make an awesome game and lift the community together!
