BRACUnofficial Gamejam #1

This is a casual gamejam. It is exclusively for students (current/former) of BRAC University. It is just for practice and is designed as a learning experience. We hope many students make their first game for this jam and get to connect with eachother.

The jam will run for 1 month from 23rd September to 23rd October. There is no extra points for submitting early. The judgement period is from 24rd October to 31st October and the results will be announced on 1st November.

We have opted for a long time frame so that more people can learn and participate. If you start making a game and miss the deadline we will still allow you to do a late submission.

The jam has an optional theme: "Academia".

While optional, we highly encourage implementing the theme. The theme can be implemented in your world setting, game mechanics, character design or other aspects of your game.

For example the characters of your game may be a part of an academic institute. You can take inspiration from franchises like Harry Potter, Naruto, and My Hero Academia. If you think about it, these are just a magic school, a ninja school, and a superhero school respectively. What other kind of school can you think of?

Another potential twist is that the institute is evil. For this you can take inspiration from media like The Promised Neverland. This is a great angle to pick if you want to make a horror/thriller game.

Another option is that something unrelated to academia takes place at an academic location. Here the action is happening due to an external reason. For example, a zombie survival game set in an academic setting. Or perhaps a tower defense game where you have to defend your campus against aliens / outside threats.

You can also incorporate some aspect of your personal academic life. For example: TARC, dodging traffic trying to reach campus in time, Bagha etc.

Here are some existing games that use the theme academia: Hogwarts Legacy, Persona, Bully, Doki Doki Literature Club, Detention, Steins;Gate

These examples are not exhaustive. You can think outside the box. We encourage your creativity.

A team of 1-3 people is recommended. You can have a larger team, but coordination becomes hectic. We also suggest not having multiple coders in the same team unless you have a lot of experience with version control software like Git. Ideally your team should have one programmer and one artist.

Going solo is allowed but not recommended.

You can use any engine, programming language, and framework. We recommend picking between Godot or Unity if this is your first game. The game must be playable from a web-browser.

We recommend teaming up with an artist to make custom assets for your game. However, if you cannot find an artist you are allowed to use any assets (paid or free) that you have a license for.

AI usage is not prohibited but it is strongly discouraged. You are also required to disclose any AI usage in your submission.

Everyone in your team has to be a current/former student of BRAC University. There is no registration fee. The results of the jam will be revealed on 1st November. There will be no prizes for the winners. The real prize is the game you made along the way.

To be absolutely honest, we have not selected a judge for the gamejam yet. We have a few people in mind and will approach them during the duration of the jam. Once a judge has been selected, their identity will remain private until the end of the jam.

We also want to mention that we (Fahad and Shaiara) will be participating in the gamejam but our game will be disqualified from the judgement round because we are the organizers. So don't worry about any kind of bias during judgement.
