What is this?

Archipelago Game Jam is a non-competitive, 3 week long game dev jam where the goal is to make a new game (or use an existing game you've created) and have it support Archipelago Randomizer. Archipelago is a multiworld game randomizing system, meaning that multiple players can play together, each their own games and playing will grant items for other players in addition to the their own game. If you are not familiar with Archipelago, try it out before considering joining the jam, as submissions are required to support Archipelago.

Discussion about the jam is on Arhipelago Discord #ap-world-dev/Archipelago Game Jam (you need to be on the server to enter the thread, server link here)

There will not be voting/rating for the games, but we have something else in store after the submission period! 7 days after the jam Birdwards organizes an async game using the submitted games. More about the async here.

If you worked on a game submitted to the jam and would like to be guaranteed a slot as a player in the post-jam async, please DM the async organizer on Discord (username: birdwards), and he will DM you the room info at the start of the async, 3 days before the room is made public.

Theme

The theme of the jam is "Islands". The theme is there to give inspiration, but following it is optional.

Rules

You must submit a free, original game you developed. You may develop a game specifically for the jam, or add AP support to a game you have already started developing (which may or may not already be published). Your submission must include an apworld, and the game if it's not included in the apworld (like APQuest).

Also your submission must follow these rules:

  • No NSFW/adult content. The jam aims to be accessible to everybody, so aim for 12+/T rated experience at most.
  • Usage of AI for code and asset generation allowed in moderation (ie. try to do most stuff yourself) and must be disclosed. I recommend finding free assets or teaming up instead if you feel that you can't do everything by yourself.
    • Using simpler assisting features like code completion doesn't need to be disclosed, this rule is more about vibe coding whole chunks of code and such. There's no clear line here, so use your consideration.

Jam will have a theme announced at the beginning of the jam, but following it is optional.

FAQ

  • What game engine should I use?
    • Any game engine or framework is ok, but I suggest checking that there is an existing integration library for your engine of choice.
    • Web build is recommended if possible.
  • How to make the APWorld/AP integration?
    • See the documentation. The #ap-world-dev channel on Discord is a good place to get help with more specific questions.
  • Solo or team?
    • Teams of any size are allowed.
  • Can I use premade assets or code?
    • Both free and commercial assets are allowed. Just be sure to follow the license of any assets you use (you might need to omit these from your source if the license doesn't allow redistributing).
    • Reusing your code is allowed.
  • Can I use manual as the AP integration?
    • AP integration can be made with Manual (which can save you development time!), but using it with the game should be easy enough (so add some kind of inventory editor in the game to enable this option).
  • Can I make an AP integration for an existing game?
    • Only if it's your own game! This is game development jam, so integrations to existing (free or commercial) games is not allowed.
  • Can I edit my game after submitting it?
    • Yes! There's nothing preventing you from making updates to your game during or after the jam.
    • For the sake of the async, please refrain from making breaking changes after the jam; or at least keep the original version available to download.

Other

Upon submitting the game you will be asked a few questions, so try not leave submitting to the last minute!

  • Was the game made specifically for the jam?
    • 1) The game is made entirely during the jam period.
    • 2) The work on the game started prior the jam.
  • Did you use AI/LLM generation for code or assets?
  • How many people worked on the game?

This jam is unofficial and not affiliated with Archipelago project and its creators.
