Welcome to the Abstract game jam.  A game jam that hopes to bring light to the community of gamers who enjoy a dive into history with ancient games like Go, Chess, Senet etc.

But why?

Abstract games have existed for thousands of years.  They were the first competitive games that have ever existed and are the heart of the player vs player competitiveness we see today in a modernized world of Video Games.  But these games are aging, and even scarier, fading.  This Jam should bring hope to the Chess, Go, and Checkers players of the world.  We simply just need more!

Rules:

  • An entry should be Player vs Player (1v1)  A battle of two minds.
  • It can be programmed by any means possible; whether that means an advanced engine such as Unity, something friendly like HTML5, or even something so simple that a Terminal like Command Prompt does it justice.  Gameplay is prioritized to graphics
  • Whilst not entirely necessary, keep it simple!  Easy for new players to learn, this should invite non-abstract game players.
  • Try your best to be original.  Do what you envision a fun abstract game to be, don't bend yourself to the ideals of others.
  • Just have fun!  Don't stress on what others will think of your game, because if you yourself enjoy it, I GUARANTEE someone else will.

One thing that I encourage all entries to bring is Depth.  Depth is the ability to bring logical thinking and reasoning to a game.  Some abstract games have great simplicity but are flawed by the lack of depth.  A good example of this flaw would be Tic Tac Toe.  An example of a game with great simplicity and great depth would be none other than Chess.
