A few days ago a game developer posted something that went viral on Twitter.

(tweet | steam page)

This sparked a big debate and was followed up by other devs.

(the creator of this second tweet explained it was a parody, but you still have to admit it'd be pretty cool)

Why would anybody in their sane mind go through the trouble of using such a complex method to produce a sprite for their game? Well, because it's fun, enjoyable, and the most productive might not be the right one (among other reasons).

The point of this jam is to take a detour. Go out of the way. Do things that others would call crazy. Waste time. Spend ridiculous amounts of time crafting something in an unorthodox way. It could be visual assets, code, music, or something else.

That's the whole theme of the jam. That's it. That's the theme.

Recommendations:

  • Don't stress about finishing a game. Maybe the jam ends and you've made one tiny element of your game. That's fine.
  • Be unproductive.
  • Remember that the theme of the jam doesn't just apply to art.
  • Take some time to explain how it's related to the theme of the jam when submitting your entry.

This jam won't have rankings, prizes, or anything like that. As long as you're respectful do things your way (any tool, any team size, start early, etc).
