This June 4th marks 30 years since the Tiananmen Square Massacre. On that night, after months of protests asking for reform and democracy, Chinese army opened fire and killed thousands of students, teachers, and ordinary citizens. But they will never kill the people's memory.
How can we remember & embody the spirit of those who died for their belief in a more democratic China?
This jam is an open-ended call for creative works related to the Chinese pro-democracy movement. Not sure what kind of interactive media can be made on topics such as this? Consider...
Rules & guidelines
- Absolutely no racism! Be civil and respectful to the subjects of your game and other jam participants. Take liberties with storytelling, but always be mindful of the distinction between the Chinese people and the Chinese government.
- Do some research: if you live in a country with unrestricted access to the internet, treasure it. ๐ There are many firsthand accounts from protesters, journalists, even soldiers available!
- You're not limited to just the day of June 4th. Consider the months of protest that led up to that point, attempts at dialogue with the government, and afterwards, the exile of protesters (look into Operation Yellowbird) and the government's continued denial of the atrocities committed. Contrast 1989 with other successful anti-communist revolutions of the late 80s or with Taiwan's Sunflower Movement and Hong Kong's Umbrella Movement in 2014. ๐๏ธ
- NSFW is allowed, just disclose this on your game's page. Consider trigger warnings for any intense scenes.
- Only use assets and code you have the right to use.
- You can submit anything you've made from any time, it doesn't have to be made within the jam period.
- First time submitting? Learn how on this page, then come back here, click submit and select your game.
Voting & prize?
The purpose of this jam is to keep alive the desire for a fair and democratic China through interactive media. Feedback always helps us improve, so consider the following when voting:
- Storytelling, historical relevance, and respect for those involved
- Visual quality & aesthetic style
- Music & sound
If enough people enter and vote on the media submitted, I will go to the June 4th Museum in Hong Kong and personally mail you a small souvenir! ๐ฎ
