Theme: Srikandi (n: /sriː ’kandi/, Malay for “warrioress”)
⚔️ Srikandi (n: /sriː ’kandi/, Malay for “warrioress”) is the sub-theme that explores representation and inclusion of characters throughout Malaysian and ASEAN folklore. As most popular folktales in Malaysian folklore are often portrayed through archetypal journey narrative, this sub-theme explores diversity and inclusion beyond the widely-recognised Malaysian folklore figures and heroes—with highlight on Srikandis [sic].
As illustrated by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), folklore is an intangible inheritance from ancestors, as the art and narrative symbolise cultural and societal context of a community (Kurin, 2007; UNESCO, 1989). As folklore characters are often known for archetypal stereotypes rather than their empowered narrative (2019), Srikandis [sic] from Malaysian folklores within cultural heritage are often sporadically documented through debut in theatre, films, animation, and academic publications (Normaliza, 2018; KKKM, 2021) rather than interactive content such as digital games.
Relevance of Theme
The “Folklore” theme is aligned with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MOTAC) Malaysia initiative in enhancing activities for the restoration and conservation of cultural heritage and intangible knowledge (DIKN, 2021) within documentation of heritage figures (adiguru) as well as digital content creation for new media such as interactive media, digital comics, and animation (Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, 2021).
As of in the past, oral tradition and folklore consumption are passed down through storytelling sessions and story books, in which these stories are then later documented into film and animation circa 1960s (Muthalib, M., 2016). Additionally, folklore storytelling via new media medium has children and adult reacted positively compared to traditional medium, and are more inclined to further discuss and disseminate the main characters in return (A. R., Rosly, & Halim, A., 2016).
📜 OBJECTIVE 📜
The objective of the 48 Hour Folklore Game Jam is to brainstorm, design, and collaboratively build a (digital) game within the folklore niche. The general theme would be "Folklore", however it is only during the theme announcement (22 July 2022) would the specific theme be announced to all registered jammers. The keywords: Keep the narrative localised (no western-centric lores!), yet diversely inclusive!
🤝 JAM STRUCTURE 🤝
48 Hour (Online) Folklore Game Jam is Faculty of Animation and Multimedia, National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage’s (ASWARA) debut game jam in the theme of "Folklore". Similar to hackathon where you will be working collaboratively within specific time towards producing specific solution, a game jam is more or so similar. However, we encourage experiential learning, creativity and innovation more than competition!
