Asset Jam! Instead of making games, just make the assets.

This will be the 32BitJam community's first "Asset Jam". This jam is unranked. Submissions will be added to a collection on itch after the jam is over.

What is an asset jam?

Typically, game developers join game jams and they make games during that time. For this event, you will make assets and release them on itch.

Soon after this jam, we are hosting the 32Bit Winter Jam. Consider taking this opportunity to make some assets and then make a game with those assets!

Rules

1) Assets only.

Not a game jam, so game submissions are not allowed.  This jam is for game dev assets only. This includes code, music, sound FX, textures, pixel art, 3D assets, animations, etc. As long as they feel like they belong in the same graphical era.

2) No AI generated work.

No AI generated visual asset, no AI generated code, no AI generated audio asset. Materials used cannot contain AI generated content either.

3) Respect Copyrights.

You  may use materials not made in this jam for your creations. If you did not create those materials, you must have permission to use them or the material must be in the public domain.

4) Source materials must be clearly credited.

You must list any materials you use to make your assets if they were not created during this jam.

Who are we?

The 32BitJam community is a group of developers, composers, and artists that have a common love for games inspired by late 90s aesthetics. This jam is for any project that looks like it belongs in the PS1 era. It's the perfect opportunity for developers and artists interested in 3D to have their first stab at it, as simple 3D visuals are part of the aesthetic.

Q&As

Q: Can I start before the jam starts?
A: Yes, because this is unranked, you can start whenever you'd like.

Q: What about a 32Bit Game Jam?
A: Check out our next planned game jam here: https://itch.io/jam/32bit-winter-jam-2025

Q: Can I sell my submission during the game jam?
A: Yes.

Q: What is a "collection"?
A: When you visit any game on itch, there is an "add to collection" button in the upper left corner of the page. Once the asset jam is over, all of the submissions that follow the rules will be added to this collection. https://itch.io/c/6503947/32bit-asset-jam

Q:  Can I make multiple submissions?
Yes. Or alternatively, you  could bundle them into an asset pack. Totally up to you.

Q: How will the submissions be promoted?
A: Once the jam is over, submissions will be added to a "32BitAsset Collection" on itch . That collection will be promoted on social media by the official 32BitJam account and by other members of the community. The collection will also be promoted on our discord.

Q: I have assets I made before this game jam, can I submit them?
A: Yes, on two conditions: First,  you must be a Member of our Discord . And, Second,  your assets must fit the "32Bit style". So, no High-Res Art, High-Poly Models and no AI-generated anything.

Q: May I work on teams? Is there a limit to team size?
A: Yes you may work on a team. No limit to the size.

Q: Why did my submission get removed? Who do I talk to about that?
A: Please DM DevEarley on our Discord Server.

Q: Why does this jam exist?
A: Our discord is full of really talented artists, creators and developers of all kinds. Recently, when polled, the community showed strong support for doing this kind of asset jam. So here it is.

Q: I really don't want to join another discord, but I want to create assets that look like they would be on a console game from the 90s. Can start work on something and submit even though I am not a member of the discord?
A: Yes.

Q: Is there a theme?
A: Not for this jam. The only real theme is "32Bit". Think about games looked on the Sega Saturn. How they sounded on an N64. Perhaps  "Asset Jam 2" will have a theme ;)

Q: What kind of assets should I make?
A: Consider the next game jam you want to be a part of. Make assets that you could potentially use for that game. Or consider what other devs may want. Holidays are coming up. Perhaps devs are probably looking for Halloween  or winter holiday related stuff.
