2018 Life.Love. Game Design Challenge

Presented by Jennifer Ann's Group, a nonprofit charity leveraging technology for social good.

The topic for this year's Life.Love. Game Design Challenge is:

BYSTANDERS

Bystanders: people who witness, or are otherwise aware of, potentially harmful behavior that does not directly involve them.

For the purposes of our game design challenge, we are focusing on bystanders of problems commonly facing young people.
Some examples include alcohol abuse, bullying, cyberbullying, depression, online harassment, self-harm, sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, and teen dating violence.

Can you create a game that educates players about how bystanders can safely and effectively intervene?

PRIZES

Student: $1,000 ($500 scholarship to winner + $500 award to winner's school)

The "student" category is for primary or secondary students. In some regions these are referred to as elementary, middle, or high school.

Students under the age of 18 will require the permission of a parent or guardian.  Students under the age of 13 will require their game to be submitted by a teacher or administrator from their school.

The winning student or team will receive an award of $500. The designated school for that student or team will also receive an award of $500 to support the school in its efforts to teach video game development or to otherwise support the use of video games in the classroom.

University: $1,000 ($750 scholarship to winner + $250 award to winner's university)

The "university" category is for post-secondary students. In some regions these are referred to as colleges. Students under the age of 18 will require the permission of a parent or guardian. The winning student or team will receive an award of $750.

The designated university department for that student or team will also receive an award of $250 to support that department in its efforts to support video game development or research or to otherwise support the use of video games in educational settings.

Community: $1,000 to winner

The "community" category is for non-student entries. Entrants under the age of 18 will require the permission of a parent or guardian. The winning individual or team will receive an award of $1,000.

The 11th Annual Life.Love. Game Design Challenge is possible due to generous support by Child's Play.

ABOUT JENNIFER ANN'S GROUP

Jennifer Ann's Group is a nonprofit organization working to prevent teen dating violence and other problems affecting adolescents in memory of Jennifer Ann Crecente.

Since 2008 Jennifer Ann's Group has challenged game designers and game developers to create serious video games about issues that affect young people. Now in its 11th year, the annual Life.Love. Game Design Challenge has awarded game creators around the world for developing innovative video games that help teens, tweens, and young adults. Over 40 video games have been developed through the Gaming Against Violence program. Research by Jennifer Ann's Group and third-party researchers shows that this approach to violence prevention is effective.
