The Patch Notes Game Jam v1.0 by

Indieformer

A game jam for broken ideas, wild experiments, and the prototypes that never made it past the group chat.

Decorative Element

What is Patch Notes?

Patch Notes is our first official Indieformer Jam — a three-day sprint to make something unexpected. Not perfect. Not polished. Just playable. Maybe.

This jam is for devs who colour outside the lines. The ones who chase cursed mechanics, poke broken systems, and build beautiful messes. It’s a celebration of the unfinished, the unstable, the almosts—because that’s where the good stuff usually hides.

Decorative Element

Why?

Indieformer exists to spotlight what's next. And sometimes, what’s next needs a little chaos to get going.

This jam isn’t just for fun (though it will be). It’s a space to experiment, to fail forward, and maybe even find something worth building on.

👀 Standout games may be featured in the Indieformer newsletter, future interviews, or… who knows...

Decorative Element

The Theme: The Error Is the Feature

What happens when you stop fixing the bug... and start building around it?

This theme invites you to embrace the chaos — to take the cracks in your code, the quirks in your logic, and the accidents in your art, and turn them into the *point*. Whether it’s a UI that won’t sit still, a control scheme that makes no sense, or a mechanic that was never meant to exist, this is your chance to lean in.

Games built under this theme should make you wonder: was this broken on purpose? (And if not... does it matter?)

The glitch isn't the obstacle — it's the playground.

The Details

  • When: September 12th (12:00 AM) - 14th (11:59 PM) PDT. 72 hours.
  • Where: Itch.io, Discord, and wherever you code chaos
  • Who: Solo devs, teams, seasoned pros, hobbyists — all are welcome

You don’t need to be a coder to contribute. Writers, artists, composers, UI nerds, vibe curators— you’re all welcome. Bring a skill, bring an idea, or just bring the energy.

Decorative Element

Finding a Team

Jump into the Indieformer Discord. Post your skills, browse open roles, or just lurk until someone messages you.

There’s always a team looking for something you can offer — even if you think you’ve got nothing. Trust us.

Decorative Element

The Rules

  • You have 72 hours to make your game.
  • You must incorporate the jam’s theme.
  • No NSFW content (no nudity, extreme gore, or real-world trauma).
  • Reusing small snippets of code/textures is fine — just don’t bring in a fully finished game.
  • Game must be available in-browser or via Windows build at minimum.
  • Game must be in English.
  • Games must be submitted before the deadline.
  • If you're having tech issues near the end, please reach out — we’ll do our best to help.

AI Usage

We encourage participants to collaborate with other creators in the Indieformer Discord for artwork, music, and voiceovers rather than relying on AI. If you do use AI in your game, you must include a short note in your submission describing exactly how it was used.

Our goal isn’t to ban AI outright — clever and intentional uses can be part of game-making. But full end-to-end AI generation goes against the spirit of the jam. Using AI as a supportive tool alongside your own work is fine, as long as it’s transparently disclosed.

Scoring Criteria

  • Art (5 points)
  • Gameplay (5 points)
  • Sound Design (5 points)
  • Theme Integration (5 points)
  • Innovation (5 points)
  • Fun Factor (5 points)

With each criteria having 5 points each (30 points total), the total score will be averaged and turned into stars, with 5 stars being the holy grail.

Judging

We’ve brought in five judges from across the indie space — each with their own flavour, background, and eye for what makes a game shine:

RetroFlock

RetroFlock

Moderator in the Indieformer Discord and creator of Flock, a new YouTube channel dedicated to showcasing all-around awesome games.

Dear, IndieGames

Dear, IndieGames

Kae So

Kae So

Founder of Player3,
a platform helping creators post, earn, and build communities around the games they love. Big on making indie more sustainable.

Jake Lizarraga

Jake Lizarraga

Ex-marketing director who left the startup world to support indie developers. Now focused on helping devs craft smart strategies and find their audience.

WisestWaffle

WisestWaffle

Indieformer mod and co-developer on Waypoint, our upcoming curation tool. He's also an SBC handheld collector and aspiring game dev in his own right.

But this isn’t just up to them.

Anyone who submits or contributes to a game during the jam can take part in community scoring. With the amount of entries rolling in, we think opening it up is the best move — and honestly, it’s shaping up to be a big one.

And finally, we’ll spotlight a few Indieformer Picks — favourites that stood out for being messy, brilliant, or just too fun to ignore. Make sure you're subscribed to the Indieformer newsletter so you don't miss out on the best from the jam.

Partners & Rewards

Somehow, we’ve wrangled a few legends who want to support the weirdness. Here are the projects backing the first-ever Patch Notes Jam:

Blue Ocean Games Logo

I had a chat with Richard from Blue Ocean Games, and this partnership just made sense. These guys aren’t just another “games-adjacent” sponsor — they’re an early-stage fund with real money to spend on new indie projects.

Here’s the cool part:

  • Their model (called SAIL) is built for indies at the idea stage.
  • They fund up to $100k per team member (max $300k) so you can actually work full-time without burning out.
  • They’re transparent — you can literally read the contract and milestones on their site before applying.
  • They don’t swoop in to take over: you keep creative control, and they only take revenue after you’ve got a safe cash buffer.

They’re currently running the Rising Tide Competition where you can submit a trailer — even if it’s just an idea, not a finished game. It’s completely free to enter until September 22nd noon PST.

And because they wanted to get involved in Patch Notes directly, Blue Ocean is also putting up $500 USD in prize money. Here’s how it works:

  • Our top 20 itch.io entries (by votes) move to a second round on Blue Ocean’s site.
  • The top 5 voted games there each win $100 USD.
  • That’s on top of the Rising Tide opportunity.

This is legit, and the kind of chance that could be a turning point for some of you. If you’ve got questions, ping me (Josh) in the Indieformer Discord.

CraftPix

CraftPix is a massive 2D game asset store offering premium and free resources for indie creators — from characters and backgrounds to full game kits.

They’ve joined the jam with:

  • 25% off for all participants (use code PATCHNOTES until Nov 1)
  • 1-year memberships for the top 5 voted entries (up to 4 per team)

Check out their full library at craftpix.net or browse their freebies section for assets ready to drop into your jam build.

Audius

Audius is music done right — a community-run platform connecting artists, fans, and devs through its open API.

They’re offering $1000 in prizes across 5 jam entries that use the Audius API in interesting ways (selected by their team).

Whether it’s streaming soundtracks, building audio-driven gameplay, or just vibing — if you use the API, you’re in the running.

Jamlytics

Jamlytics is a community of devs and game jammers who mix creativity with data. They’ve worked with some of the biggest jams (Brackeys, Pirate, Shovel, B1t Jam) and are helping us keep Patch Notes fair and fun.

  • Catch rating spam & rule-breaking entries
  • Verify builds & jam timelines
  • Provide community graphs + insights

They also run tools for participants like a Game Jam Guide, a teamfinder, and their own community Discord.

Jamlytics is supporting Patch Notes for free — but runs on community donations. If you’d like to help keep these tools alive, reach out to Quinten on their Discord.

Indies Together

Indies Together is a new collective of inclusive indie streamers, founded by SchrodingerKittenUmbardacil, and LadyPeridot. They’ll be streaming Patch Notes entries throughout the two-week voting period, giving your games extra spotlight on Twitch and beyond.

Player 3

Player 3 is a new platform built for game creators — share projects, grow a following, and earn support with drag-and-drop profile “Bits,” media-rich posts, and smart project pages.

Created by our judge Kaleb (Kae So), Player 3 is partnering with Patch Notes to offer:

  • An exclusive Patch Notes achievement badge for all participants
  • Special badges for finalists & winners
  • Feature spots for the top 3 games on the Player 3 home page
  • A partnership offer for the top-voted entry

Create your profile on Player 3 — when signing up, choose Partner under “How did you hear about us?” and enter Indieformer. You can also join the Player 3 Discord to give feedback and help shape the roadmap.

Massive thanks to these partners for backing strange ideas and scrappy creativity.
