I like the idea of an ant endless runner/shooter. Congrats on submitting, and good luck if you decide to polish further.
Thanks! I have been making progress recently in both its design and implementation. I hope to upload a new version fairly soon that features significantly more progress than what had been made during the gamejam due date window. Unlike the initial upload, the future upload should be a completely playable game and hopefully it will be fun to play!
The ant cannon idea has potential and I could see this getting quite fun once the main shooting mechanic is finished. Would be good to have WASD controls as well. The ants looked creepy enough even with the pixelated style.. Would like to seeing a more complete version. Good start
Thanks for the comment and advice! I would like to create an input layer for the keyboard, both WASD and arrow keys, the mouse, touchscreen and joypad. Using AGK (AppGameKit) I should be able to do so without too much trouble or effort. I also want to animate the ants using cel frames, because I have additional photos to make them appear more crawly. It is so easy for classic "feature creep" to permeate a project, even a relatively simple game! But, if I do things one step at a time in iterations it should be attainable. Thanks for your encouraging message; I think that with the several comments different users have given encouraging me to finish the game I started, I feel inspired and motivated to do so! In fact, I think I'll even work on it some this evening, and when I have something more playable I'd like to inform those who have commented here in case they'd like to give it a 2nd go in its more advanced state. Thanks again!
Obviously the main mechanic (shooting ants) isn't complete, but it's still cool that you put something together for the deadline. Here's to a fully-functioning game next year!
Thanks! Last year in the same gamejam I tried to get a game submitted in time but missed the due date. This year I got a partially-completed game uploaded, but hopefully in the next gamejam I will submit a completed, fully playable game! That is one of the most challenging factors in a gamejam, getting a game submitted that is a complete game. I am still learning and practicing, but I hope to improve my production rate in the near future. Thank you for the comment.
Why can't I kill the ants? Try to develop the game further. It might be fun.
You're correct - the game's design is that the cannon can shoot the ants, but the incomplete game does not yet have sprite collision. That is definitely a key feature of the game that I need to add! Thanks for the comment and feedback, appreciated. I do hope to make progress in the development of this particular game as time permits.
I would liked to have seen the completed version as you describe below - there are lots of good ideas there. I encourage you to complete your game after the jam is over and add those ideas in.
That's a good idea, thanks. It is fairly easy to add WASD input mappings using AppGameKit (currently, the left and right arrow keys and the spacebar allow for movement and firing). In addition, I'd like to add basic joystick/joypad support, and possibly also mouse movement support even though AGK does not support a relative mode for mouse input. The original idea/vision was to also have the ants move horizontally zig zag down the screen, some ants direct vertically, and a few ants at downward angles. And with cel animation frames, and aligned facing rotation. Each time an ant gets hit with a bullet it would be replaced by another slightly faster ant, up to a limited maximum speed. And each time an ant hits the bottom of the screen, it would chip away at the player's score or shield buffer or something similar to that, until the ants prevail and the game ends. I think I will finish it and update it post-gamejam, thanks for the suggestion. I genuinely appreciate users' feedback, suggestions, constructive criticism and the like, thanks!
Nice start! It's always good to get something submitted even if it's not finished. The more you learned for this one, the easier the next one will be. Keep at it!
