Never done a solo RPG before. Made a run at Castle Charon and thought I was doing pretty well until the Champion of Evil (on the other side of the paper) absolutely wiped me out. Fun!

Glad you liked the game!  Sorry your adventurer met a premature fate - maybe the next one will fare better.  Thanks for playing and taking the time to share about it!

This game is awesome. There are so many adventures to play and supplements made by others, the stories are fun and even though character creation is so simple, i had a blast. For Castle Charon i made a bard character that just kept charming everything and then stabbing them (and if it was uncharmable i fireballed it) and even though that character is simple, i'm excited to make crazier characters! I do hope you make a volume four sometime, i would love it.

Glad you like the game!

Just discovered solo play and trying out different games currently. I really liked the concept of not having a journal game, but modules which I can play. My thief Jyria failed and was killed by the Ebon Warden in Castle Charon, but I had a lot of fun nonetheless.

I was a bit confused with the lock symbol and stopping on it, but from one of the videos below I guessed this just means to read it before I count the total number and check which trait I get as a second one.
I totally overlooked that I get a treasure for every enemy I defeat, so my next run shall be even better as I will end with more treasures.

I will definetly takes these with me for the next long train ride or journey in general. It seems to be neat enough to be playable in a small space with maybe a dice roller on my phone.

Nice, glad you like the game! Hope you have a lot of fun adventures with it.

I just saw this!

Is there a printed available like on lulu?

I need this.

Ty

1980's  revisted!

Sorry, but no, I haven't set this up with any printing service. Seems a bit overkill for only three pages, and most print-on-demand places I've seen don't offer printing individual sheets, anyway, which would be what's needed to make the booklets.

If you don't have a printer, you can usually print documents like this at your local business supply store or print center.

You might find my booklet folding video a little easier:

Ah, very nice.  That last tip about folding was new to me. I'll have to try that out! Thanks for posting this.

Hello again... My Vikings video of Dungeon Hero went up today. Really love this game so many hours of fun :)

Oh, cool!  This is great to see. Love the little displays you have to make clear what adventure elements are in play - that's a really nice touch.

Hello, would you be opened to an amateur french translation ?

If I want to play it, I will have to translate it, so why not make it useful to other people ?

I'm just not sure about how it works about the rights, publication, etc.

Thank you

🧙‍🇫🇷

Hmm.  I'm not sure. I've licensed the game to Button Shy for use as their AdvanceQuest line. They're fine with me leaving Dungeon Hero up for the community, but I'm less sure about things like translations. If it were solely up to me, I'd be fine with it, but there are other people involved.  You're free to send me your translation of course either way.  I just can't guarantee I'll do anything with it!

Either way, I hope you enjoy the game! Good luck on your adventures.

Hello there. I love this game. I play it for Talk Like a Pirate Day 2023 on my channel. Check it out.

Dungeon Hero - Pirates - Session 1 - Solo RPG Actual Play - Talk Like a Pirate Day Special

Nice!  I just watched through all three episodes. You did a great job evoking the spirit of the game, telling a story with the trait prompts, inventing your own unique character to take on the challenges, and you even survived to the end and scored some treasure (and some Pringles!).

Thanks for making a video about it. I hope your viewers enjoyed watching you play it.

I've created a devlog post about TLAP day, because it turns out I have a fair amount of stuff that supports piratical adventures, and I included a link to your video in it, so people who follow me might check it out.

Awesomeness thank you heaps.

Lovely little system. Very unassuming at first glance, but does a great job being evocative and kicking off my imagination into the same “play space” that my mind goes into during a great game. Highly recommend, and I’ve recommended it to others as well.

Imminently hackable, I would imagine. The only thing I really miss out of the box would be a bunch of random tables to generate a character to get started faster, but that’s very easily found elsewhere, and the small form factor can’t be beat.

Glad you enjoy the game!  And thanks for taking the time to say so – it made my day!

If you like this system, check out Button Shy's AdvanceQuest, which is the same system with a few new adventures, and Welcome Aboard, Captain which is a sci-fi solo RPG that uses a similar system with a procedural mission generator to create a Star Trek like experience of being a starship captain.

There are also some people who have made fan expansions for Dungeon Hero. Check the devlogs or search itch to find them. People have contributed some fun stuff!

I love the system, it’s fantastic :)

I was wondering, though, is there any copyright information supplement designers (such as myself, hi) need to know? I would love to try my hand at making a ‘zine with this system and publishing it here in itch

Glad you like the system!

Button Shy has picked up the system for publication as AdvanceQuest, so right now they are the ones who have the license.  However, Button Shy and I agree that it's fine for fans to create their own adventures and content as long as people are just sharing it as personal work, it's offered for free if shared, it includes a credit linking it back to me and the system, and it does not include any racist or otherwise offensive content.

If you do end up creating something, message me so I can check it out and send a message out to my followers.

Thanks, this was helpful, I’ll keep these in mind. Again, it’s a wonderful system :)

Hi, first of all I wanted to tell you that your system is great, it's what finally allowed me to get into solo roleplaying and I really love it.

I have been working in a small suplement for the game, which mainly features rules for Resting, Magic items/potions and some basic content generating.  The question is if there would be any problem if I publish it (it would be a Pay What you Want here on itch.io).

But anyways, keep doing stuff, your creations are great!

Glad you're enjoying the game!  If you like this, be sure to check out AdvanceQuest from Button Shy games – it's the same system, licensed to them for a line of card-based RPG's.

As for other people writing content for the system, Button Shy and I agree that it's fine as long as people are just sharing it as personal work, it's offered for free if shared, it includes a credit linking it back to me and the system, and it does not include any racist or otherwise offensive content.

Does that apply to the 2x2 mechanic by itself? Like if I wanted to develop something outside of the fantasy setting of Dungeon Hero and use the 2x2 mechanic (which is ingenious, by the way), are there separate guidelines, or would it be the same as another adventure for Dungeon Hero?

If you wanted to, say, make a series of sci-fi adventures using the Dungeon Hero mechanics then it would just follow the above stipulations.  If you wanted to flesh out a larger game with the 2x2 mechanics, that would be a separate issue.  Game mechanics cannot be copyrighted or owned, so assuming it was different enough in presentation and description from Dungeon Hero to differentiate it, it would be your own work (although I would certainly appreciate an acknowledgement if it is heavily based on my designs).  If we wanted to synergize and make an "ecosystem" of 2x2 games, kind of like what PbtA is doing, then that might require more coordination.  For something like that, we'd probably also need to talk to Button Shy as well, though, in case they want a special exclusion for the stuff differentiated by AdvanceQuest.

Hey! I finally finished the supplement, would you mind checking it out?

Cool.  Looks like some fun additions.  I posted a devlog about it pointing other fans of the game to your expansion.

this system is so neat! understood in minutes. Fun right away. I would love a book version of this that is the rules and just a bunch of adventures lol. How do you feel about people writing adventures for this system?

(+1)

Glad you're enjoying the game!  If you like this, be sure to check out AdvanceQuest from Button Shy games – it's the same system.

As for other people writing adventures for the system, Button Shy and I agree that it's fine as long as people are just sharing it as personal work, it's offered for free if shared, it includes a credit linking it back to me and the system, and it does not include any racist or otherwise offensive content.

Other people are making fan content for the game.  Check out Ellie Valkyrie's work, for example.

If you do decide to make something and share it, be sure to send me a link so I can direct other Dungeon Hero fans to it!

Awesome! Also, do you have an idea of how I would be able to play this with other people as well? I have a group of like 4 friends (shocking) that are into the system and want to play together. Was stuck on if everyone would progress in the dungeon at the same time or not. The simplicity is so brilliant.  Have not found anything quiet like it so far lol. Thank you.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the game, and that you have friends who are too!

I don't have any explicit rules for playing Dungeon Hero multiplayer, but I imagine you could have a shared pool of stamina and resolve, and then each player makes their own traits.  Or perhaps distribute the available stamina and resolve across different players. For each situation, you simply choose two characters' traits to bring to bear.  Should be balanced largely the same as the single-player version except you'd have more opportunities to use d12's and d10's, so you might also make a rule that you can't have more than one d12/d10 in a roll or something.  If you try this, I'd be interested to hear how it plays out.

You might also be interested in Fable on Your Table, which is a game that uses similar mechanics but with a tabletop miniatures setup.  It's also solo-only, but I'm currently working on a version that can accommodate multiple players.

There's also Welcome Aboard, Captain, which is also based on the same system, but in a more Star TrekBabylon 5 Orville type setting.  That has rules for generating challenging procedural missions that are very similar in structure to the Dungeon Hero games, and it includes rules for playing it multiplayer, with players taking on the role of different bridge officers.  There's a free preview adventure called Charon Wormhole that introduces the game, its mechanics, character creation, and the setting; you can check that out to get a feel for how that game plays out.

awesome thanks a ton!

I love this little system! 5 stars for me! On a side note, I would be really awesome to have a supplment that helps the player generate his/her own adventures

(+2)

Glad you enjoyed it!

As for creating adventures, be sure to check out my upcoming game Welcome Aboard, Captain, which uses similar mechanics as Dungeon Hero but for a sci-fi game. It has a procedural mission generator that works really well.

The first authored adventure is available as a learn-to-play game, but the full game has the generator.

Lone Spelunker,

Got to tell you I just ran through Castle Charon, I had a lot of fun playing it. I hit the minions twice (72 & 80) I thought I was dead for sure.

I have a question, if there are multiple monsters (like the minions) the extra damage doesn’t carry to the next monster, correct? I had 1 hp left on the first minion and rolled and my higher roll left me with 4 points of damage. I played it as the first minion died and no damage went to the second minion until the next roll. Was the correct or should 3 damage be applied to minion 2?

(1 edit)

Glad you enjoyed the game!

You had it correct; damage does not carry over to the next enemy. (Otherwise, there would be no difference between one 12 strength enemy and two 6 strength enemies.)

Hello! i gotta say your profile is amazing and all projects that you made are really stunning! I always wanted to make a tabletop game, how can i start with idea and mechanics? do you have any guides like youtube channels or tutorials? 🤍

(+2)

Hi, glad you like my stuff!

I don’t have any tutorials for making your own games or anything, but there are plenty of board game design communities on the web.  For instance, the Button Shy discord server has lots of people talking about making games with regular competitions and discussions. There’s the /r/tabletopgamedesign/ subreddit.  There’s a popular “Board Game Design Lab” podcast that interviews designers. And there are many more out there.

Just jump in!

thanks for feedback, it was very helpful! have a great day 🌞🌞🌞

I had a lot of fun playing these RPGs. Loved the one-shot zine format and all the dice rolling. Keep these coming, please!

Glad you enjoyed it!

Just finished writing up my first playthrough on my gaming blog. Absolutely love the mechanics and style of this game. Five stars, definitely!

Cool, I'll check it out!

Downloaded the core and the 2 expansions on seeing Mel Li's review and Geek Gamers.  Played the Castle of Charon so far, and got through by skin of teeth. It was great to have a system that created a framework for a story to develop from your imagination..hope some more might be on the way..

Just wondered though about the role of treasure, not sure if this has been raised before, but it seems that it is gained during the play without it providing some benefit for your character, or am I missing something?

Love the game and looking forward to the next one..oh, and please continue to provide pdf option on any future releases as my poor old eyes struggled with the text size yiu have to use with the zines format..

Just wondered though about the role of treasure, not sure if this has been raised before, but it seems that it is gained during the play without it providing some benefit for your character, or am I missing something?

No, you're not missing anything, that's correct.  Mechanically, its role is to be your "score" at the end of the game.  But it's also a story prompt – you should imagine what cool thing you found when you earn treasure.  Don't just say, "+1 score" and be done with it – use it to imagine something.

There are places in Dungeon Hero adventures where you find things that are mechanically useful.  However, those aren't handled with simple treasure bonuses; they're detailed in the game using lock paragraphs, and typically give you new traits you can use or other special benefits.

If that's not satisfying, though, if you want, you can always swap out one of your dice if you want to envision finding something useful.  Since you can imagine whatever you want for your character traits at character creation, it won't unbalance the game if you change what your traits represent as you go.  For example, say you just fought an evil blacksmith and earned a treasure, and you imagine finding a weapon he was working on. You could replace out your d8 Lockpick Set with a d8 Wicked Serrated Sword if you wanted to.  You could still imagine using your lockpick set; you'd just be rolling a d4 for it in later challenges. But you'd have a cool sword you could imagine using during your adventure, too!

(This isn't explicitly mentioned in the rules, of course, but I, as the designer, give you my full blessing to engage in this sort of story engagement!)

Anyway, glad you're enjoying the game.  Thanks for writing in!
