Year 3: Semester 2 : Dev Log #1 Pre-Production

Pre-production in game design is always difficult; choosing the right team members for the jobs at hand, guaranteeing that everyone has an equal voice in the early stages of the creative process, and ensuring that the design doesn’t go too off course or beyond the deadline can make or break this phase of the process.

As a team member, I was in charge of creating the game’s story framework. To make sure the story was captivating and immersive, during our pre-production, I primarily focused on collaborating closely with the other roles in our team. I made spreadsheets for the possible aliens in each game type to aid with this. This enabled us to keep track of the various alien species and their traits, which was crucial for writing a seamless story.

In addition to my work on the narrative, I also assisted the other members in various ways. For example, I worked as a technical writer for the programming team to translate the text for the designers. This helped to ensure that everyone was on the same page and that the game was consistent in its messaging.

Finally, I also made and expanded a mood board for the art team. This was a fun and creative process that allowed me to explore different ideas and concepts for the game’s visuals. I worked closely with the art team to ensure that the mood board was aligned with their vision for the game.

Overall, I’m proud of the work that I did on the KDP! It was a challenging and rewarding experience that allowed me to grow personally and professionally over the semester. This year, I personally feel that our team has a really good dynamic and everyone is contributing, so I’m excited to see how the game turns out and confident it will be a huge success!
