i've tried downloading it once and it wouldn't start
deleted and redownloaded it. got through the 1st day but on the 2nd day, when i try to talk to someone, the convo just never starts and the game lags (indefinitely) :/ can't rate the game but it seemed promising

Hi there!

That sounds like it's a resolution error where the buttons to start the different convos are off screen.

I'm in the middle of trying to push out my newest game (due in... 2 days 😱) so I don't have the chance to look into putting out a patch atm.

You can try fiddling around with the resolution options in the options screen in the meantime to see if you can get the buttons appearing that way. Otherwise I'll try to get out a patch as soon as possible!

Thank you for letting me know!

I just uploaded a new version of the game to hopefully fix this resolution issue you had run into!

hi I'm having trouble playing the game on mac. It say it doesn't have the right application to open?? I've tried downloading on the launcher etc> PLz help

Huh, thats very weird. Can you copy/paste the exact wording of the message it's giving you?

Is it possible that this is what is happening?:  https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/open-a-mac-app-from-an-unidentified-dev...

nope, it just says

The application “A Heart of Butterblue 1.2 Mac” can’t be opened.

and then another pop comes up

Safari can’t open the file “A Heart of Butterblue 1.2 Mac” because no available application can open it.

Ah, okay! I got a friend to take a look at it on their Mac (Mac Monterey) and it appears to be this issue: https://superuser.com/questions/1345755/how-to-fix-the-application-cant-be-opene...

You can try the steps in that post!

It looks like something about version 1.2 doesn't play nice with some Mac OS and will get flagged. My friend did tell me they didn't have this issue at all with build 1.1 though. I've also unhidden the Mac 1.1 build if you still couldn't get the above steps to resolve the issue. (Just a caveat that there are some bugs in this version)

Hope that helps!

TBH i just played the game via a virtual simulator, and it's pretty good.

But i won't lie I'm not a tech coding type of gal and like i tried to follow the steps but it didn't work. It's just really confusing.

What a wonderfully-crafted visual novel this is. Everything regarding the story, the characters and the progression of what the reader knows about what's going on was done so well. I was led along and I learned what I needed to at just the right moment before figuring it out for myself, and overall I think the narrative and the 'twist' are very well constructed for a game of this length. Especially the 'other' Phebe and her own resolution.

I liked both Phebe and Peyton, though I could feel there was an almost tragic element to the story from the beginning, so I kinda braced myself for tragedy early on. You do that very well. At the end I was sad, but I was also happy that the sadness was genuine because the story was so well written.

Overall I really, really liked this VN, and I think you have a real gift. I'll happily read whatever else you upload in the future.

Oh! Thank you so much for this lovely comment! I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed it!

I really love the game so far but after having triggered Payton's scene when he gave me the flower, the flower isn’t in my inventory so I can't examine it in order to reach the true ending, help 🥹

This bug omg ..... I made a breakthrough with a possible solve for this load/save bug (it's the source of this and the fanny shop bugs) and will do my hardest to fix it tonight! If I can't do that I'll upload a build where you can access the ending via a cheat code instead for the time being. Thank you for letting me know you're still getting this bug!

Oooh thank you for your quick answer and for a possible solution! Fingers crossed it'll work 🤞

I've just uploaded a build just for you! It's the "Peyton Ending Shortcut" build (it's a PC build but let me know if you need Mac or Linux!).  What you'll want to do is click the "Peyton Ending" button on the main menu and click on the bed in Phebe's room! This will cut straight to Peyton's ending (starting with the underground tunnels). The game should also drop a Flower into your key inventory for you to use in the final scene!

Thank you for letting me know that this glitch was still in the game! I got a nice look at what was going on under the hood and I feel like I've got a lot better idea of what areas to focus on in my own programming journey. Thank you again! :D

Update: It works! I got to see Payton's ending and I really love it! Thank you for making this game (I really enjoyed reading your Author's Footnote). I took the opportunity to support you (it's not much) and I can't wait for your next project(s) and meanwhile I'm going to check your previous game :)

Sorry for the late reply! Thank you so much for your reactivity! I'm on Mac but I'm going to see if I can launch the PC build with Wine Crossover first before asking you for a Mac build :)

Omg! Thank you so much! That's really kind of you;;!

And Im glad the build worked! I should have asked which operating system you were using, haha. 😅

So glad to hear it worked out and thank you so much for playing and your support!!!! 💕💕💕💕

This looks so interesting though when I click to sleep it hangs up. I'm clicking everything lol even used my keyboard for y (yes) So I reloaded and just went to town but when I click on the sherrif the text block is empty and no matter what I click nothing happens. Only thing that works is esc which takes me to title screen. From the comments here I see this isn't a problem for anyone else, so im confused :/

Sounds like that's a resolution issue. When you open the game go into options and try out different resolution options. When you click on the bed or talk to the sheriff more buttons appear at the top of the screen. Alternatively you can try clicking the edge of the window screen and drag it until you can see the buttons at the top (when you try to sleep etc.). Hope that helps!

Ok thanks! I'll try!

I am INCREDIBLY smitten! Oh my goodness what a lovely little story! I was never 100% sure what was going on, but I didn't feel totally in the dark either, and the concept is FASCINATING.

Even with the darker theme, there were so many heartwarming moments. [Also funny ones, I adore Fanny.] Peyton is just such a refreshing character in his simplicity. Very sweet, very patient, very attentive, but he never crossed into pushover territory. It never felt like he was a one-dimensional character, his dialogue was incredibly smooth and thoughtful and, even though it's a shorter VN, his and Phebe's relationship developed very organically to me. She gradually relaxed around him, it didn't feel abrupt or rushed because of how her responses changed slightly with each day.

The portrayal of her emotions was very well done, it almost touched on unreliable narrator territory just because of how little she really understood about her feelings. I felt like her anxieties and discomfort were conveyed so well, without her having to actually verbalize any of it, just by how she spoke and the way her expressions would change.

[The sprites are SO expressive by the way, Peyton's soft smile made me actually squeal the first time I saw it.]

The writing in general is also just very beautiful to me. The poetic repetition, the callbacks to certain phrases, the nightmare sequences are some of my favorite scenes purely because of the use of prose, the descriptions were surreal, it very much gave the impression of being strange and dream-like. I have aphantasia so I can't picture things, but it set the tone for the setting beautifully. Every morning after one of those nightmares, I would also feel a little uneasy, I kept waiting to see if something outside the farm had changed or gone wrong. The atmosphere was incredible.

I took notes while I was playing, so I could keep track of the things that I found particularly interesting, and it felt like the word choice for specific scenes was noticeably intentional. I like that a lot! I write in my personal time, so I know how easy it can be to just throw synonyms around to avoid using the same words over and over again. With this story, though, it felt like there was a lot of intent behind certain phrases used, I really do think the wordplay was incredibly thought-provoking.

When you describe dead flowers as CORPSES, you have my immediate attention LOL

The soundtrack is wonderful by the way, I didn't used to play VNs with sound on because I tend to get a little overstimulated with a lot of noise, but lately I've been making sure to keep the background music on so I can better immerse myself in whatever mood the writer is trying to set. The title screen song SLAPS, and occasionally I would just tab out and kind of bop along to the general BGM.

Most of my notes are just me screaming about how precious and sweet Peyton is, I wasn't expecting to gush as much as I did since he isn't the type of character I gravitate towards. He was so conscientious of Phebe though, I loved how gently he interacted with her, I loved how he recognized that she would never be the one to call him out, so he took it upon himself to bring up his own mistakes/motivations to clear the air.  Absolutely the sweetest man, I should have attempted Hugh first because I don't know how I'll recover now LOL

The resolution was so bittersweet, gonna be honest I'm petty so I didn't want to see the old man get a happy ending, but for Other Phebe it was nice to see her be able to rest. I love the notion of using the butterblue flower as the new core, and I love that it was even hinted at in the journal that there could be something other than bones used.

Speaking of, the set-up for the mystery was also very good. I don't think I was handed too much information too quickly, I did manage to guess what was happening early on, but I didn't get the specifics correct and there were other details I wouldn't have EVER been able to figure out.

And Phebe was a delight as a character, I genuinely enjoyed reading her thoughts because her perspective, the way she looked at the world is so unique, it was interesting. Having a unique lens like that for a character to view the story through I think adds so much more to the experience, it's like there's an added layer of the mystery to sort through. I liked having to stop and think about her word choices for a minute, or certain reactions that I couldn't understand right away. Just a very engaging character overall, even though one might not think so at surface level.

Evocative is a good word to describe this VN, I think. There was so much packed into the few hours I spent playing, I know I'll have to play it again now that I know what's going on just to see if there were any other hints that I missed.

A beautifully strange, memorable experience! I mean that in the best of ways. I look forward to whatever you work on next, and I'm definitely going to go back and look at the other games you mentioned in the authors notes!

This is such a beautiful comment! Thank you for playing it and also leaving such a lovely review! I mean it when these types of comments really brighten my day and are the best part of making games. So glad to hear the themes are coming through!
