The Future of Among Us

Hey everyone, PuffballsUnited here! It’s been a very exciting time for us the past few months! We’ve absolutely loved seeing everyone enjoying Among Us! Forte has been working hard to get the servers adjusted to deal with the huge influx of players. Thank you so much for bearing with us through these growing pains. Hopefully we can get started on new content soon! Speaking of new content…

Us devs have had several long discussions about what we want to do with the game. When do we stop working on Among Us 1? What content goes into Among Us 2? The main reason we are shooting for a sequel is because the codebase of Among Us 1 is so outdated and not built to support adding so much new content. However, seeing how many people are enjoying Among Us 1 really makes us want to be able to support the game and take it to the next level. We have decided to cancel Among Us 2 and instead put all our focus into improving Among Us 1. All of the content we had planned for Among Us 2 will instead go into Among Us 1. This is probably the more difficult choice because it means going deep into the core code of the game and reworking several parts of it. We have lots of things planned and we’re excited to bring new content to everyone as you continue to enjoy playing!

Here’s some things that are coming on the horizon:

* Servers. Forte is still working very hard to figure out our server issues. We don’t have an ETA but things should hopefully be getting better and better. This is taking up all development time on his end.

* Colorblind support. It’s something we’ve put off for way too long… We plan on adding other identifiers for players as well as certain color focused tasks (Like wires). This should also open the potential for more colors. In the past we couldn’t add more colors because it became too difficult to tell players apart.

* Friends/Account System. This is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time but just haven’t been able to tackle. For the health of the game going forward we’re going to sink our teeth in and figure it out! This one will definitely take some time.

* A new stage! It is still very early and we have only just begun designing the layout. The theme has been settled on though! The next stage in Among Us is going to be a Henry Stickmin themed location!

We have LOTS of other things planned too, we just need to prioritize and organize all our plans. Stay tuned!

Just a suggestion

add a mapmaker

steam workshop

up to 25 player

3d suport

shader

(+2)(-7)

25 players would be too much for a unity game

map maker is cool and all but there would be too many maps to choose from

workshop is cool, like team fortress 2's workshop but i don't think that would fit

35 support? what do you mean? there are ways to find out who the impostor is with 3d

among us itself is good on it's own, doesn't need shaders.

really good ideas, but would be better for another game.

(+5)

"25 players would be too much for a unity game"

??? There are battle royale games made in Unity. Unity is more than capable of handling thousands of dynamic objects just like any other engine.

Among Us uses sprites for everything you see on the map.

The maps would need to be resized and re-balanced to make 25 players work.

Not to mention server stability. If any player is playing on mobile with a poor signal, how do you think that's going to look on both sides?

And let's not forget meetings. How would that even be able to work with 25 players? Sure, discord Voice Channels might be able to make it work. But for textchat, it's going to be a cluster fest.

And 1 imposter games would be too hard for majority of the players. Think about it:

  • The visual task bar overall progress would be going up even slower. Whether you have 1 task or are at the max limit.
  • Players can stick together in a big group. Hard for the impostor to put sus on anyone else when 60% of the alive players were all together.
  • There would be so many sore losers in public lobbies. Quitters, ratting out, ect.

The positives?

  • When alot of players are grouped on top of each other, the impostor can kill and they might not be able to figure it out.
  • Being able to say sus without evidence might actually work.
(+4)(-4)

What about a currency system? Like gold or coins. They will be earned by winning as impostor or crew.  Winning for both side gives you gold/coins. When you die as a ghost or get caught as an impostor and you still win, you will earn less gold. The gold would be used for special skins.

(+5)(-1)

oh yeah and no gold for the idiots who immediately leave game if they cant be impostor

(+1)(-2)

Might a good idea for mobile players

(+1)

I'd like to have a goal to work towards while playing and an incentive for people to not leave

Horrible idea.  That's like saying the new level will be free to Steam Owners but mobile players will have to buy it.

(+3)

> Friends/Account System.

Hopefully the account system will help eliminating the cheat. It's the worst thing for me and really ruined the gameplay.

this was confirmed on the last announcement, don't worry about it.

Glad to know that. Hopefully the devs are doing well and I'm looking forward to more fun with Among Us. 🎉

Just a suggestion

When a player gets killed, the impostor should appear as a shadow (shaded black) during the kill animation and the impostor should also look like a shadow to ghosts, this is to prevent ghosts from snitching who the impostor is through Discord and other stuff, its really annoying when ppl do that.

This doesn't solve the problem of players snitching at all. Those players could be aware of who was near them just before they were killed, or they could just yell out "I was just killed in Cafeteria!" and the game is still spoiled. Don't play with people who talk as ghosts.

You should join a discord server where they don't allow meta gaming. Once dead, they can't talk except among each other through text chat.

They could remove ghost chat.

(+5)(-2)

Just a quick thing:

Hosts should be able to kick/ban people even in-game

(+3)(-1)

the ability to kick people out of the game during a meeting was removed because developers realized the host could kick the impostors out to make the game quick and unfair

There should be a way to avoid kicking/banning impostors but still being able to kick/ban hackers

(+1)(-1)

what about a vote system for in-game kicks/bans? if someone is being rude or trolling the majority probably wants that person out of the game

I've ran far too many games where mob mentality mass voted to eject a player for absolutely no reason. Good idea, but in practice would need more ironed out

(+1)

nah, they should add a vote kick instead, if hosts can kick and ban people in-game it would be really toxic and a lot of people will abuse it.

I've ran far too many games where under mob mentality all players mass voted to eject a player for literally no reason. The point of the game is distrust and backstabbing, in theory the idea is good but in practice just becomes another aspect of inherently nasty gameplay. Maybe host has chance to veto a vote or something, idk. It'd need ironed the hell out of it.

I honestly am glad that you guys are taking the game in its current state, and will just be reworking it to essentially be A-2, but with the ability to hopefully retain the current hype/popularity of the game, while also not... "punishing" those who've recently bought the game due to said popularity.

An aside though: I do think if it becomes a possibility, that an attempt to allow for workshop/modding support would heavily benefit the game, but if not, then I don't think many would start to complain, as there are games that do completely fine without it.
(Although you'd have to probably rework the lobby system, and add a separate system for mobile players, since they wouldn't be able to experience said custom content, etc. )

Congrats to all the support you have all gained over the past month however, and I hope that you're able to add everything you're wanting to add, even if it may take a bit more time & work.

this is both sad and exiting.

Rip Among us 2, But all of the new stuuf in the normal among us everybody already has. Still very exited! Good luck

Some suggestions i have

  • Allow lobby hosts to change the map and the amount of impostors after each game. That way, the lobby doesn't have to disband.
  • Add a player report option so that we can report players who are sore losers (meaning they quit when they don't get impostor at the start of the match, quit because they were killed, or quit because their time as impostor came to an end).
  • Add more keybinds. The chat doesn't have one and maybe the tasks screen can have some. Also, show players the keybinds. How many know that TAB opens the map, E for Use/Sabotage/Vent, and Q is to kill? Probably 5% at best.
  • Punish the players who quit out more with more tasks or longer sabotage/kill times so that it can teach them not to quit.
  • Allow an option to be able to let the amount of tasks in the lobby decide the kill cooldown. It's rather annoying when there are 7 tasks and the kill cooldown is 10 seconds.
  • Allow an option that can add more tasks or even all tasks on the map.
  • Add a map editor so that players can make their own maps. And allow map reporting for those who just want to be cruel with their maps.
  • Allow ghosts to see the list of players and view their remaining tasks.
  • Add an option when reporting the dead body to allow the game to say where you found it. This can help those who may not know the map.
  • Add an option that randomizes the lobby settings. When this is on (can't be turned off by the computer), it shows all the settings at ??? and at the end of the match, the settings are revealed.
  • When at meetings, if you were on the doorlog, vitals, or security cameras, allow the player to present the last 10 seconds as evidence.
  • When there are 2 or more dead bodies on the map and a meeting is called or a body is reported, don't have the other bodies disappear. This can allow for others to find the body.

Yeah, E for Sabotage and Q for kill

I already try that

(+1)

R to report

Thank you. Never knew that.

(+3)

Steam workshop maps would be poggers or something like that.

yes

(+1)

Agree with most comment that I would rather see a sequel that has super changes than more content with the original game. This is just a recommendation tho, and it is ultimately your choice whether to make a new game.

Hey can I recommend that the colored portraits of each player when in the Discussions be replaced with that individual players character model+costume?

(+2)(-1)

I think a cool idea would be some sort of map creation system, maybe you buy a 10$ DLC off the steam store and it lets you make maps that you can play on with people that have the join code.

(+3)

What about support for Mac? Would this be a possibility to look into?

I really hope they do

its made in unity so maybe if they use opengl or metal instead of directx it could possibly work?

(+10)(-1)

I think a good feature to add is the ability to see the map while in discussion time. It defintiely will make the game more beginner friendly, as I know I had a hard time.

I agree with this.

100% this

or maybe have the option to close the voting thing and get back to doing tasks or killing or whatever after you voted

https://imgur.com/a/I1xMYwu

(+2)(-7)

I feel like you should add some qol and new content to the current game so people still play it, but trashing Among us 2 and instead focusing on Amoung us 1 is the wrong choice imo.  What's the point in continuing with among us 1 when the code is shit and it'll take you forever to add anything?

(+8)

Everyone is playing AU1. AU1 isn't perfect. AU1 gets all the attention to make it perfect.  AU1 becomes better game. Everyone is happy while playing AU1. Devs have time to make AU2 cause everyone is fine with AU1. AU1 keeps playerbase and guarantees AU2's success. Simple as that.

(+4)

it might end up being easier fixing the game than creating a new one from scratch.

My impression from reading this is that AU2 was far enough along because 'starting from scratch' was easier, but not so far along that they could count on the current focus on AU1 necessarily translating into AU2 launch sales.

So the devs are going where the people are, which is in AU1.

(+2)(-9)

I really hope @Innersloth will give focus to small streamers. Especially people like me who's focused on the Game itself.

(+7)

"I really think I'm awesome and deserve attention"

(+5)

what is this comment actually, hahah, hopefully in time you can look back and realise how bad this sounds

(+2)

I agree. While in theory, it's great for those of us with 1 viewer. But there are so many smaller channels out there that it would be too much work for the developer.

(+1)

can't wait to see what's done with it :D! so glad we all got introduced to this fun game :]

(+1)

Thank the youtubers. If none of them played it, Among Us wouldn't have became what it is.

(1 edit) (+3)(-2)

You should 100% make the room code only visible to the host of the room.

To clarify: I think this should be a thing for private games, ESPECIALLY for livestreaming. I've seen it be a problem for a ton of streamers accidentally showing the room code.

(+2)(-2)

uhm... no. I understand that you don't want people who are teaming up or in phone call to join together and ruin the game, but if I'm with a friend and want to play together one of us will join a public room and tell the other the code (we don't talk while playing, we're not assholes) and making a new room everytime and then hoping people join would be pure suffering

I'm referring to private games, should have clarified.

If anything, there should be an option in private games to hide the room code for other players.

(+5)

I think it should be an option when you create the server, like a toggle switch for show join code to guests.

(+1)

Pointless when the lobby is set to public.

(+2)(-1)

you should make it available for console.

I think they mentioned this in an interview.

(+5)

But ONLY for Nintendo Gamecube
