Our alien swarm isn't just about overwhelming force, each creature is bred for a specific biological role and evolves along different paths depending on its purpose within the ecosystem. These concept sheets show some of the early explorations into how our units evolve from simple workers into complex battlefield organisms.
We treated each Hive unit like it was grown, not built. Think more Zerg hive than robot army. Every unit begins as a Worker, and from there it branches into roles like:
Fisher โ Small and sensory-focused, with a glowing lure to bait enemies into ambushes.
Hunter โ Light skirmish unit with agile legs and a curved back, almost snail-like. Meant to harass and strike at weak points.
Salvager / Miner โ Shorter-legged utility types with protective shells. These are more passive but essential for the Hiveโs economy.
Scout โ Light, fast, fragile, and expendable. Visually designed to look alert and wiry, like a mix of insect and crustacean.
On the Soldier track, the designs become more dangerous and armored:
Pincer โ Heavy melee unit, inspired by beetles and crabs. The front claws are exaggerated and powerful.
Stinger โ Our ranged soldier. Scorpion-like, with a tail used to hurl venomous projectiles. We wanted something that felt dangerous even from a distance.
We emphasized the chitin armor design for these, with layered plates to imply defensive evolution without looking mechanical.
At the top of the food chain is the "Keeper" or Queen unit.
We explored two variants (A and B). Both have massive plated backs and clawed feet, but:
A feels more passive, maternal, like a medic or support unit.
B is more aggressive and crab-like, fitting a potential queen or apex predator.
These designs are meant to evoke the idea of an ancient, pulsing intellect hidden beneath tons of organic armor, something more than just a creature, something old.
We'd love to hear your thoughts:
Which design path do you prefer, A or B for the Queen?
Any creatures youโd want to see evolve further?
Should we go even weirder with the next tier?
