Learning and Procrastination

Window Through Time
A browser game made in HTML5

As is tradition for me now, I gotta get down a little something of a postmortem after a jam.

My last release was the demo of 'Accidental Necromancy' and I kinda fell into a Final Fantasy XIV hole after that. It's been over a year and I'm still enjoying the game a ton so I haven't really touched any art or programming since. I've still done some writing here and there when an idea wouldn't leave me alone until I wrote it down but that's about it.

I've always been intrigued by O2A2 though and working within those limitations so when I saw it pop up on a reddit post I decided to give it a go and I'm glad I did. I still struggle with procrastination and totally hating what I'm doing as I'm doing it, but I think it turned out pretty nice! If even one person enjoys it then that will make me happy ♥

New features (for me)- the endings gallery and setting up ending screens. I was really intimidated by adding those types of things in my prior projects but I found some great resources that made it pretty easy. Endings List tutorial by NomnomNamiScreen Language by Feniks helped me a ton!

I still have a long way to go if I want to improve-

  • writing (as I'm sure a lot of writers can relate to) is still usually a lot of time spent staring at a word doc trying to figure out what I'm doing. I want to dedicate more time to reading and writing to help me in this area
  • art & design (although I think both the background and the character sprite turned out awesome despite me not having practiced anything in a year!) is tough but I know I can improve if I actually take the time to practice!!
  • programming- I have a tendency to just mash stuff together and hope it works (tbf I've been pretty successful with the stuff I've tried so far) but I really gotta take the time to actually learn why things work so I can apply them again in the future
  • Lastly, since I know myself and know that there'll likely be periods of time in between working on games, I need to start a resource for myself where I can save all the lessons I've learned from mistakes I've made and cheat sheets for stuff that I'm just never gonna memorize

Hope all my fellow jam participants take care of themselves! I'm gonna try to play as many entries as I can!!
