Hello, my name is Andrew, and I modelled various props that have been used in Un-Abandonedware. Today, I will be discussing my thought process when modelling the various pipes in our game.
The first thing I did was not actually make the pipes themselves, but the bolts that would be placed on the rims of the pipes. This was done so I could easily place it into position and duplicate it along a rotation axis using “Special Duplicate” in Maya. Once I got the bolt modelled and properly UVed, I got to work on modelling the pipes.
The first pipe I made was the Straight Pipe so I could use it as a base for the other variants. It was rather simple to model and UV, and I especially like how the placement of the bolts came out on the rims of it.
The Second pipe I made was the T-Pipe, and it was quite the challenge. The biggest issue I had with making this one was trying to actually give It the stuck-out portion of the pipe that actually makes it T-Shaped. I tried various methods to make the shape look good, like Extruding the edges after Circularizing them, but I took a step back and realized that I was making it more complicated than it needed to be. All I needed to do was make a duplicate of the pipe, cut it in half, rotate it 90 degrees on the Y-axis, and then snap the vertices onto the original pipe. Add some edge loops temporarily to merge the vertices together and the final product of the pipe was finished.
The next pipe I made was the cross shape, but after figuring out how to easily make the T-Shaped one, it was really easily to make this one, as all it needed was another side portion on the opposite end from the T-Shaped pipe.
The last pipe I made was the curved one, which was really simple to make thanks to a special function in the Bridging tool. This function is called “Curve Type” and it allows you to bridge edges either Linearly, which is a straight line, or by doing something called “Blend.” Using blend automatically adds a curve to the bridged face that gets smoother as you add more divisions.
For example, here is a screenshot of a Bridged face with blend and no additional divisions.
And here is a screenshot of a Bridged face with blend and 8 additional divisions.
This has been my Devlog for the week and I hope you are excited to play our game once it releases.
