This game was made for the first-ever FI MUNI Gamejam, which had the theme “Shift Happens”. The game jam lasted from Friday 16:00 to Sunday 12:00.
And a shift did happen - at least for us.
We first wanted to interpret the theme as “work shift happens”. We started to make a game about trying to escape the office on a surprise shift. We found some nice assets, but when it came to actually coding the game, we found it lacked a clear direction and purpose.
So about 6 hours into the jam (around Friday midnight), we pivoted. One of the other ideas we had was for an RGB shooter where color shift plays a role. This idea was clear as day - no questions about whether it all makes sense. It’s a colorful shooter.
In an hour and a half, we had a prototype and went to bed.
And the rest is history! We knew what we were going for, so the rest of the project followed pretty quickly.
Chop chop.
Obviously, looking back, scrapping the first project was a good decision. Maybe the idea had more depth and would be more fun to play. But we found ourselves at an impasse - not knowing how to proceed with the implementation. Going for a simpler idea paid off. Especially in a game jam context it makes sense.
In the end, itch.io gave us some trouble!!! I am on a Mac and for some reason, uploading the build from a Safari did not work on sunday - even though it worked on Saturday. Sigh. But we managed to submit the game some 4 seconds before the end of the jam. I heard 1 second is plenty of time, though.
