Day 1 – Joining a jam

Windy City Politics
A downloadable jam

I've never made a game. But I've long had stray thoughts about one boiling in my head. They include:

  • Understanding a space is fun
  • This includes working out its rules
  • Lo-fi art is democratizing

For this year's unofficial Waypoint community jam I want to explore these concepts.

More concretely, I'll likely be using ASCII art because that's one of the cheapest and most simple ways to create a space. It'll be a top-down game about understanding a tiny world, although I doubt I'll make it that far. It'll be made in Amethyst because I enjoy amateur programming in Rust, plus its community is small and LGBTQIA+ friendly.

At this point I'm able to render an area and move a tile representing the player around it. If this project turns into a spectacular failure, I'll at least have that and the fun of learning some new stuff.

Plus the five star joy of seeing what other community members come up with.
