After taking part in the It's Based jam I am happy to report that I learned a lot. However, I didn't win. I have yet to play the winning game so for all I know I was completely outclassed but a few things that contributed to my loss that maybe anyone could learn from.
1) A game over screen with no explanation. During the judges live stream they lost because their base was destroyed. They however didn't know this and there was nothing that told them this was the cause of their loss. Maybe they thought this was a bug or maybe after their 8 hours of streaming were simply done but that was it, my game was eliminated.
2) A screen too large. My home computer has massive monitors, and I hate playing on tiny screens, so I exported and uploaded my project with the huge aspect ratio of 1920 x 1080. This apparently doesn't fit the vast majority of screens.
3) This has more to do with luck, but I was the very last game the judges played, so it's no surprise their patience was thin. One game over screen in a game designed to be slightly challenging and they quit. Maybe people don't like roguelikes as much as I do but I honestly don't think the judges gave my game a fair shake.
You can either live and learn or live and lament.
