This is just a small update on something I've been working on recently.
Right from the beginning I wanted character portraits, however the only option was to either use GB Studio's 16 x 16 pixel icon approach for message boxes, or use sprites.
I found out very quickly that 16 x 16 was not going to cut it, as you could not make out much of the details to get a good idea of what the characters looked like.
I then opted for sprites of different sizes but noticed that they did not look as intended on a small screen. It was similar to looking at something from a distance and doing your best to picture it based off of the faint details.
It would never look the same way up close.
That made me realize it was a contrast issue, so I made new portraits that had a better focus on light and shadow to emphasize each character's features.
The results were much better this time around and you can see that in the video above.
