After taking a break from this for a while I decided that GameMaker is not it. I tried to make it in JavaScript, but I kept needing to use canvas to make my vision for the game, and if I'm already using canvas for everything... all signs point to Godot. Godot would be worth it for the ease of updating and speed of opening the editor alone. GameMaker has a place in this world, but it is not with me. Now that I've moved the game to Godot I've been able to develop much faster and actually implement some of the things I wanted this to have.
