1. Adding Extra Cuts for a Dynamic Flow
The cutscene needed to feel energetic and immersive, so I added extra cuts to emphasize pivotal moments and keep the pacing engaging.
- Planning Key Moments: I reviewed the original flow and identified areas where additional cuts would add impact.
- Camera Work: Using Unreal Engine’s Sequencer, I employed various techniques:
- Slow pans to establish the atmosphere.
- Quick cuts to heighten the tension during Bigsby’s outburst.
- Subtle transitions to shift focus between characters without disrupting the energy.
2. Enhancing Atmosphere with Props and Weapons
To reinforce the saloon's pirate theme, I added weapons and other props that reflected the characters and setting.
- Weapons:
- Spear
- Cutlass
- Throwing Knives
- Axe
- Scythe
- Interactive Details: Props were positioned dynamically to integrate with the lighting and environment.
3. Scene Arrangement for a Lively Setting
The Broken Compass needed to feel like a character itself, so I meticulously arranged the space to reflect its chaotic charm.
- Crowd Behavior: I populated the saloon with more pirates who reacted to the environment—a cheering pirate, a dude who grabs a drink, and a stumbling dude on the second floor.
- Subtle Details: I adjusted the angles of chairs so that they would align with sitting characters, and so the characters would face the camera appropriately.
4. Introducing Characters with Name Overlays
To make each character more memorable, I added name overlays during their introductions.
- Design Choices:
- A rugged serif font was used to match the pirate theme.
- Names appeared near the characters with eye-catching animations.
5. Creating Slides for Context
To provide additional context for players, I developed slides summarizing the scene, characters, and setting.
- Visual Design:
- The slides featured parchment textures, compass designs, and weathered edges to resemble treasure maps.
- A bold title—"Rogues and Rumors"—topped each slide, framed by pirate-themed illustrations like crossed swords and anchor motifs.
- Content:
- Character Profiles: Each pirate had a dedicated section with a brief description and an image pulled from the cutscene.
6. Final Edits
I swapped around several cuts to grow more intrigue for the audience, and make the overall cutscene make more dynamic sense.
