Don't play break out
A downloadable game for Windows

So, you all know how I always promise I'd make a bigger version of most of my game jam games?
Well it happenned.

https://lm2play.itch.io/dont-play-breakout-deluxe

Sooo, long story short:

I started to really, really hate my job, so my girlfriend and I decided to start making game professionally.

We started a company, LM2Play, and decided to release one small game before going for bigger seas. For that, she tried many of my games. Many many.

There's two of them that caught her attention more than the others: Don't Play Breakout (and the old "vitomiom demo" thingie) and The Magicien's week.

For the later, it's just that it's a great game, and spoilers: it's the next we're gonna make into a full, professional game.

But for the first? Well... She saw I had a special attachement to it.

Don't play breakout used to be "vitomiom", which used to be "next the ball game", which itself used to be "the kirby ball game". This one is the first game I ever made, when I was something like 12 year old. I have no idea where it can be found, the zshare link died long ago, but all of those are important to me, in different manners.

When she tried Don't play breakout and vitomiom, I stayed silent, hoping with all my heart it'd speak to her. And she saw that. I'm not sure it speaked to her, but I'm sure she saw how much it was important to me. And she told me to make it into my first pro game.

Also I showed her the video in which At0mium says my game is "one of his little coup de coeur". I told her how, back in these days, it was supposed to be my last game ever, I was too tired of it, and this very video made me go back at it again. I have this video saved on my computer, and sometimes, when I feel down, I go back at it. Not sure it's still on youtube, doesn't matter, I have it near and dear to my heart.

So I took nearly a year to learn Godot and to make it into a full game. With her undying support. Always.

I wanted it to be short and sweet, and challenging but calm. Something that you would not play once, but once every two or three years.

A game made to stay with you, not an important one, but as a safe haven. I think the music represent it very well.

That's how I started making Don't Play Breakout Deluxe.

Here's a little FAQ:

Why godot?

Game maker is easier to use and the game would have been released faster, but I wanted Don't Play Breakout Deluxe to feel grander, but also to feel totally mine. Game maker is a company, and I don't want to have to pay a license to update this precise game. Godot was perfect for that.

Why that name?

Well, marketting reasons, basically. "Vitomiom" talk to no one, Don't play breakout does.

Why that short?

I worked a lot to trim out all the "fat". I didn't wanted any "that part" in the whole game. Also, I feel like the feeling of wonder would have been lost if you could visit too much of the environments. Here, you stumble upon some elements, but you never get to learn what happened here. Why the spaceship alien are like this? You won't know. Why is the only town hidden in the darkest place? You won't know. Why is there a visual effect here and not there? Your guess. Making it short was a way to make the stories and logic behind the place just suggested.

Why on another itch account?

It's the account for the pro games, and we're gonna be two making them. So it's not "just" MarionLAsticot for them. This one is the exception, and even then, it wouldn't exist without Laury Millevylle. Also I wanted this itch to still be able to receive some weird experimentations.

Are you gonna leave your job?

Not right now, but it'll come once games become a correct source of revenue.

Why so little advertisment before?

I never really wanted this game to be a huge success. I just wanted it to be the special game for at least one player.

That player being me.

It's my special game.

My first ever commercially released game, and maybe the most important game to me. Not just this version, but all the versions that came before.

Maybe one day I'll post the other two versions I still have access too. Not gonna be updated re-release, tho, but maybe like, an add for an update.

If you wanna play it, go for it. It's good. Not gonna change your life, but sure as hell changed mine.

So... Who wants to not play breakout again?
