Dev Log 1 - What a Solo Game Dev Can Do

Hello, this is Anvery and welcome to my dev log. This will be hopefully the dev log of my very first Steam game. So, my plan is to develop a game solo with Unity. After using some idea generators to get all the game ideas that are too big for a solo dev, I started to look for advice for indie game dev on YouTube. And the best advice I got is not to build the one dream game as the first game. It is because no matter how many skills I learn, I have limited time to work on the project. If I design a game that requires complex systems, it will never be done, and eventually I will lose my passion.

So I grab a few pieces, or features to include in my first game.

My very first Steam game will be a single player Atmospheric Puzzle Game. I won’t make it multiplayer, unless the game gets very good feedback that tells me otherwise.

To start with, I made the Input System that can handle keyboard and mouse, and gamepad inputs. This will be useful no matter what games I am going to make.

Then I made the third person control, with just a capsule. The character will move according to the camera’s angle. It can sprint and jump. I will leave the animation to the future me, as I don’t have the character models yet. Since I am not an artist, I started to build the dialogue system with the minimal graphics and let the future me handle the arts. I then add sprite change to show which character is speaking. Then I add rich text and typing animation to it, to make it more reader friendly.

Up to this point, I believe there is more work to be done in other areas than programming, so in the coming days or weeks, I think I will be working on the visuals.
