Rewrite - sneak peak

What, Once, was Here?
A downloadable game for Windows

Rewriting is already in progress, so here's a little behind-the-scenes sneak peak into the thought process behind it!

If you've already seen some of the multi-choice 'events' scattered around the world, you may have noticed (on some level) that the writing felt like it didn't have a very strong direction to it.

You'd have been right, since I hadn't yet firmly decided on anything concrete to aim for.
There wasn't a solid foundation for the writing to lean on, no commitment to any specific details to stand out with.
This inevitably lead to the writing feeling like it was always holding back on being something of it's own.

The rewrite aims to fix that. Firstly by writing up a background and history to the world of the game, and then updating the rest of the writing to draw from that history.

And history is the direction I've settled on.
The history of a lost civilisation, uncovering clues, and piecing together the past.

But what fun is a game about uncovering lost history if it just hands everything to you?
What intrigue is there in a past with only one right answer?

So instead of something so straightforward, the writing will aim to always leave a little doubt and uncertainty.
Each bit of writing will hint at an element of the past, a clue about what the lost civilisation was like, or how it fell apart.
But it won't easily add up to one obvious truth.

There will be inconsistencies between clues, preventing them from matching up neatly.
Little contradictions that can't quite coexist in a single understanding of how events unfolded.
Some things will hint in one direction, while others seem to hint in another.

The game won't aim to hold your hand and guide you to being 'correct', it won't pat you on the back for having the 'right' answer.
The final image of the past and history of this fallen nation falls to you, the player, to decide.
No formality, no ceremony, no right or wrong answers. Just at the end of the day, after all is said and done, after hearing all the clues and hints, what do you think happened? what do you think was true?

Anyway, that's the gist of it!

Now, all that won't write itself, so back to work I go. Talk again soon!
