Map
I decided I wanted an overhead map for Edda to navigate. I love a map. It gives you a sense of the world. I realise you could have drawn your own of course.
Everything you need to do in the game is covered in the map above. But obviously, each area has a few screens with stuff going on - things to solve etc. So much art has been done - I almost certainly will redo most of it (I still can't decide if it's night or day). I just like refining things.
The game has gone through so many iterations since I first started it. A lot of things have been completely ditched now: the census-taker, a nasty death on the bog, climbing a hill (I kind of miss this one - maybe I can still do it)... but so many elements remain from the very first idea with the Spectrum-style screens that I *thought* were going to be the look of this game.
Objectives
I've mapped out (this is not a pun) the objectives I think drive this game now. I'm sure I said similar about 14 months ago but to repeat, I like refining things. I keep polishing the concept until it flows and makes sense. The game now has all the elements I love in a point-and-click:
- A map
- A to-do list
- Water
- Night scenes (I'm leaning towards night I guess)
- Lots of characters just hanging out
Next
I think I need to make every screen I think I'll need. I have loads already, but need to make all of them. Then I can join them up and Edda can move around the map and visit all the areas. Even if she can't do everything yet, that will be a huge moment. Then I will start populating the areas and programming the puzzles. Most of the puzzles are at the very least in my head. I have notes everywhere anyway, so can keep checking in case I forget something.
OK, that's enough for this week.
