Music to My Ears | GDU Gamejam 8 Devlog #4

Go Fast, Goblin
A downloadable game for Windows

I didn't get a ton of breaks at work today to do any fiddling on the project, but I have a few hours after dinner tonight!

I have a start menu now, where you can start or quit the game, that has links to my socials on it. I used a janky in-editor picture of the tower for the background, so it's not great but I find it kind of ugly charming lol.

I've really been wanting to add some music - when I'm going to sleep I think through the project and all the random ideas I have and I kept imagining some loud, kind of obnoxious chiptune tracks to be blasting while you're trying to speed through the awkward jumps. Lucky for me, I looked at my old SoundCloud (I make music under the name Badnik sometimes) and re-discovered some ELEVEN-year-old tracks I'd made in LSDJ (at least one of which was recorded right off of a DMG - neat!)

I feel old now... but I think they'll work just fine for the jam version of this project. If I ever carry it forward I might write some new stuff specifically for it, but it has been really fun going back and listening to the tracks. I hated them at the time, but I'm enjoying them here now, in this context. Maybe I'll add them as a soundtrack download? That'd be kind of fun.

A list of things I remember adding today:

  • Start Menu with start and quit buttons, and links to my socials
  • music for start menu, end menu, and the game. Obnoxious!
  • I did this last night actually, but I don't remember if it was after I posted the last devlog - but there's now janky grass and rock textures in the area below the tower, which I enjoy.
  • adjusted fonts and stuff

An idea: I want boomboxes in the main level all playing the song and maybe also someone shouting at you maybe? so that the music is directional in a weird way
