2024 Update!

Fire of Rebellion
A downloadable game

Hello everyone! It has been a long and trying year since the last update, but I am pleased to say that I have been hard at work getting this latest version out! I am incredibly proud of the result and I hope you all enjoy it!

So, what's in the new version?

7 Aspects! 

  • 4 Character Aspects known as Sage, Poet, Warrior, and a new aspect called Comrade, focused on coordinating with your allies and alleviating their burdens. Comrade replaces the old Crew aspect from 0.4 which replaced the Faith mechanic in even older versions.
  • 3 World Aspects: Empire, Fire, Rebellion, all from previous versions with minimal rework.

Offering Moves

Each Character Aspect now has one Offering Move, always phrased as "Offer ________". Unlike other moves, the targets of these moves who may reject or accept whatever it is you offer, whether that is insight or mercy.

Escaping Shadows & Burning Lights

Shadows and Lights have had their associated moves reworked. Shadows require specific detrimental actions to escape, while Lights may be "burned" to perform a specific feat. Doing either grants a character Resolve, which unlocks advancements.

Surety and Collapse

Surety and Collapse are new conditions a character can gain if they have an excess of Lights or Shadows respectively. Surety protects a characters Lights and grants a powerful Moment of Surety, which is unique to each playbook. Collapse is its opposite, making Shadows more difficult to get rid of, but offers an opportunity for drama with the Moment of Collapse, which forces a character to leave the crew for a period of time.

A New Playbook!

The Loyal, a playbook defined by its devotion to one other character, usually a crewmate, makes its debut here, securing their partner with their Bond of Loyalty and helping out the crew with their Vows.

These are the major features of this update, and I can't wait for you guys to try them out!

Plans for the year

I will be organizing a playtest of the latest version, so please stay tuned for announcements on that.

I will also be writing up and publishing a full version of the game that goes into detail about each mechanic and how it is meant to be played. Barring any incidents, I should be able to get this out within the next month, by the end of September. It will be available to everyone who's already purchased the game.

No promises at this point, but I would also like to find and pay some artists for layout work and to provide some on-page visuals for this game, especially for each of the playbooks.

Price Change

As I announced last year, now that Fire of Rebellion has been updated, I am updating the price from pay-what-you-want to $10 a copy. While we've been managing here, finances are still tight and I could use the support. I apologize to anyone I might price out, but that is my current situation.

That said, I will likely put up community copies if enough people ask for them or are willing to pay for them.

On the state of the world

There are a number of ongoing causes in the world right now that could use support - Palestine, Sudan, Congo, to name a few examples. While I designed this game to produce "rebel fantasy", it is not a substitute for activism or material support for people suffering colonialism and imperialism.

Depending on how many express interest, I would be willing to produce community copies for those who show me proof of donation.
