Pressing ALT + E after lassoing, bringing it to Edit mode, then pressing ALT + Y will make it change layer. Pressing ALT + Q will force the edit mode to quit, but you will still have the lasso there that can be drawn on. Make sure to put this technique to good use in combination with the new Onionskin modes.
