The 11th April 2019 is the first day of the "I Can't Draw But Want To Make a Game". I decided to use this jam as an opportunity to start development for a personal project. Since I have never been an artistic person; I decided to use 16x16 pixel art. During the jam I will focus gameplay and some sound design. Once the jam is over I plan to continue development until I have a finished project.
I started the day by developing some 2D tiles so that I can build up my first level; which will be transformed into the tutorial level. Seen in the attached image, I create a basic set just to create my simple level demonstrating the current mechanics. I also developed an animation using 8 frames. This animation is used to present the coins in game. Although all of the assets so far are 16x16 pixels, the coin was made using 8x8 pixels.
Mechanic wise, I started of by completely rewriting a character controller script that I had developed during studying at college. This lead to me being able to move around my character; which is currently a placeholder. The second mechanic I added was dropping down from one way platforms. This was a simple script to develop revolving around editing the rotation offset of the platform effector.
When the day came to a close, I had finished drawing up a small character in a 16x16 grid; which will recieve animations over the next few days. Once I created him in Aseprite, I added him into the game world.
