Pre-Alpha (Non-)Progress Update 3

So this is how I DIE
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Android

Update

Hey everyone. This is just a quick update for anyone following along to say that I massively overestimated how much time I would have to work on this once I’m back at work.

Turns out trying to schedule just an hour each day isn’t quite enough to really make any progress. I managed to make some minor bugfixes and tweaks (like new cursors that change between menus and targeting enemies), but haven’t gotten around to any of the real items I wanted to tackle.

That’s not to say I’m not making any progress, though. I know what needs to happen, so reading documentation and forum discussions, watching tutorials and courses, and designing on paper are happening. It’s just the actual coding and editing bits I’m not getting too.

So what’s the plan?

Well, two things. First up, instead of trying for an hour each day, I’m gonna try for 2-3 hours 2-3 times a week. Hopefully having more time to focus will allow me to progress a bit more. My biggest issue is spending 40 minutes figuring something out and then having to stop after 20 more minutes because reasons.

Secondly, there is a week in Feb where my wife is away, so I’m planning to say no to all social activities that we would have that week and instead use the time to focus.

The main items I have on the Trello as must-do items are:

  • Skill unlock mechanic (unlocks skills between runs)
  • Modify dice layout before a new run (pick from the skills you’ve unlocked)
  • Fix animation and audio timing issues + add some skill effects (nothing fancy, just better than I have now)

And then the nice to haves would be:

  • build an actual fighting arena with paid assets (not just the random plane and wall we have now)
  • redo player and enemies with paid assets (make them look way cooler and actually fantasy, current feel is sci-fi which is not the vibe)
  • redo UIs with paid assets (again to align better with themes)

Thank you

I really appreciate the support I’ve been getting on various platforms, and I’m glad people seem to like the concept. I look forward to building this up into something people are excited to play.

I’ll have another update next week, hopefully with some real progress this time 😅
